Who Will Assemble the Avengers?

Avengers #500 cover courtesy Marvel.com

Who will take over the Avengers franchise once Brian Michael Bendis moves on? A fan asked Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso on today’s Axel-In-Charge on Comic Book Resources.

“We have a plan…” Alonso responded, ” Let’s just say the Avengers franchise will be in excellent hands. As for Brian, if you’re a fan of his work, you won’t believe what he’s writing next for us. My lips are sealed.”

Speculation:

Could Matt Fraction inherit the Avengers franchise? Fraction’s era on Uncanny X-Men was phenomenal and he’s been steering Iron Man and Thor’s solo books. Could his current Defenders run be leading up to a takeover of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

If Avengers Versus X-Men and the return of the Phoenix lead to the destruction and rebirth of the X-Men – could we see an Age of Bendis for the Marvel’s mutants?

Christmas Memory With the Mutants

X-Men #109 courtesy Marvel.com

I’m in transit today from Seattle to Eastern North Carolina to see Mom for the holidays. Before I left I wanted to share a special Christmas issue of the X-Men.

X-Men #109 was dubbed a 100 page monster issue featuring a new story by Chris Claremont plus 3 older tales set around the holidays. While the previous stories are all action packed with Sentinels, a demon stalking Kitty and Gladiator versus Cannonball, the main story is very moving and reminds us how Chris Claremont poured a lot of heart into the team he wrote so many years.

“Ceremonies” shows X-Men in a snowball fight, ice skating, enjoying a date, breaking up, giving each other comfort. Comics always deliver action, thrills and battles but once in a while, a change of pace issue like this one makes you remember why you’re cheering for X-Men to win.

I may not be posting as much as you’re used to this week because I’m spending time with family and just chilling out but I will be back up to full speed after the holiday.

As you unite with friends and family I wish you safe travels and a happy holiday.

Kitty Pryde Online

Shadowcat from Marvel Super Hero Squad courtesy Marvel.com

One of my favorite X-Women is newest playable character in Super Hero Squad Online. On the Marvel site they are calling her by her former code name: Shadowcat, but she’s sporting the blue and yellow look.

The many looks of Kitty Pryde by David Lopez courtesy Marvel.com

In Wolverine and the X-Men, Kitty is co-headmaster with Logan of the new Jean Grey School. Seeing Shadowcat takes me back to her blue/black look in Uncanny X-Men then Excalibur. The Shadowcat costume had a Black Canary but with a mask feel – and my favorite.

But one look that’s really scary for Kitty – pregnant and surrounded by Brood! Click here to see the preview from the February issue of Wolverine and the X-Men.

Jason Aaron’s Final Wolverine Arc

Wolverine #300 cover by Adam Kubert courtesy Marvel.com

A Wolverine milestone, a new villain and creative changes from Marvel today.

Wolverine #300 will be the start of Jason Aaron’s final arc on the title and takes Logan back to Japan.

“This is a good story to go out on. It’s the biggest Wolverine story I’ve ever done. Threads I’ve set up over my entire run come to a head. There has been a power vacuum in Japan since Silver Samurai died in Wolverine #1 and now everybody is fighting for it,” said Aaron.

Wolverine #300 will introduce a new Silver Samurai, son of the original, but Aaron says is very different from his father. The milestone issue features the return of Sabretooth. Aaron says he has plans for the new Silver Samurai beyond this arc.

Victor Creed’s comeback will be explained in another story by Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi – the same team that killed Sabretooth in a previous Wolverine series run.

Aaron said his two big Wolverine in Japan influences are the Wolverine limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller and Blood Debt by Steve Skroce.

Yukio (Logan’s lover and the woman who inspired Storm to get a mohawk way back around the time of Wolverine’s almost wedding to Lady Mariko) and Amiko (Logan’s adopted daughter) are confirmed to be big parts of this story.

Adam Kubert, Ron Garney and Steven Sanders are the artists working on the landmark issue divided into 3 parts.

Jason Aaron’s final Wolverine arc begins in January. Aaron will stay on Wolverine and the X-Men. For the entire presser click this link on Marvel.com.

For movie fans – the next Wolverine movie is said to be based on the Claremont/Miller Wolverine in Japan story with the original Silver Samurai as the villain.

Cable’s First Shot in AVX

Avengers: X-Sanction #1 alternate cover preview courtesy Marvel.com

Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness bring Cable back with full impact in Avengers: X-Sanction #1. This time Nathan is not a father figure, freedom fighter or platoon leader. Cable is an effecient super soldier on a focused mission.

Nathan and Steve Rogers are two determined soldiers with brilliant tactical minds. The fight is big and physical but you get a sense of the strategy behind every move.

I think you can get a sense of the battle strategies Captain America and Cyclops will execute in Avengers Versus X-Men. Cap may even learn something from Cable that could give him an advantage to beat Cyke – knowing when to make sacrifices.

We learn how Cable survived “death” in Second Coming, see a blast from Nathan’s past who sets him on his new mission and learn why he must destroy the Avengers in 24 hours.

The script is tight. The art is big, brash and bursting off the pages. The issue is one big giant teaser for the upcoming AVX but this first shot in the war in a fun yarn on its own.
