A big announcement from Marvel’s Next Big Thing Press Event today: The legendary Walt Simonson will join Brian Michael Bendis on The Avengers!  Simonson’s The Mighty Thor run alone is the stuff of legends. Here are some highlights:

Avengers #25 will feature art from Walt Simonson. This issue will be part of an Avengers Versus X-Men tie-in arc. That cover sure looks like Cap is deflecting a blast from Cyclops!

“This is truly one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to me at Marvel. When I was a young, strapping lad trying to break into comics, I’m talking years and years ago, I met Walt at a convention. I showed him my childish sketches and he treated me like a peer. He was so generous an empowering and set me on a course to be where I am now. He would keep sending me letter of encouragement and critique. That was the moment I knew I wanted to do this. He is one of the most important people in my creative life. I always made it very clear if he was ever back at Marvel I would love to work with him. I’m so happy he decided to come join us and when I asked what he wanted to do, Avengers was a big pile of everything he wanted to do.” Bendis said.

“I’m in comics myself because of the work that Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck and those guys did back in the 60’s. I was devouring everything Marvel had to offer. It was a treat for me to get into comics, to work at Marvel and to do Thor. I really enjoyed the Marvel Universe and had a lot of fun.” Simonson said.

“I got to write Avengers back in the late 80’s with John Buscema and Tom Palmer. I didn’t really get to draw the book though. I’ve never really gotten to draw the Avengers. I’m excited to draw them. But really, I wanted to work with Brian. We’ve always said it would be fun to work together, but I’ve been at DC. Now I’m back on the freelance trail and called Brian up. I did not expect to be handed a whole story arc. And when Brian said ‘There are a lot of characters’ I didn’t really realize how many characters.” Simonson continued.

“When we were building AvX, I kept referencing Walt’s X-Men/Teen Titans crossover for bombast and excitement.” Bendis said of the classic cross-over in which the two young teams faced a Darkseid/Dark Phoenix alliance.

“I’m really interested in drawing cool looking stuff. Quake looks really cool to me. The Jim Cheung AvX poster that Brian sent me looks great. I’m pretty excited to draw Wolverine again. I enjoy referencing and researching. It will come out looking like my stuff. I’m interested in the challenge. And drawing the guys from A.I.M.” Simonson said of the new characters and new looks for old favorites. Quake is a Bendis creation from Secret Warriors

“I get to draw Thor. His new threads might be old by now, but they’re new to me.” Simonson added.

“There are elements to this story that are so powerful on their own as far as who the Avengers are and why they can do things nobody else can do that they really stand out from the main event. This storyline is from the Avengers point of view, dealing with where they’ve been and where they’re going as a team” Bendis said of this 6 issue arc.

“I was a giant Gene Colan Iron Man fan back from Tales of Suspense. Iron Man has always been one of my favorite three or four Marvel characters. I’m delighted to have a chance to draw that guy.” Simonson said of the Iron Avenger.

AvX Marvel’s Most Dangerous Women Face Off!

AvX Psylocke vs Black Widow courtesy Marvel.com

Psylocke Versus Black Widow! Marvel kicked off Monday with a fanboy teaser image by Leinil Francis Yu sure to light a fiery debate!

Today on Marvel.com this image is hailed as Avengers Versus X-Men: Round One. The X-Men’s psychic ninja set to battle the most dangerous secret agent in the Marvel universe.

Betsy Braddock is a skilled ninja fighter with telepathic powers. Psylocke demonstrated she can be deadly if necessary as seen in the Uncanny X-Force:The Dark Angel Saga finale.

Natasha Romanoff was trained by the KGB, recruited by Nick Fury for SHIELD and has held her own alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on The Avengers.

Psychic knife versus Widow’s bite? Who are you cheering for? Who will win?

Fatale #1

If you enjoy Ed Brubaker’s super hero work on Captain America, Daredevil, X-Men, Catwoman but never tried his crime noir (Criminal: The Sinners, Lawless, and more collections) take a shot with Fatale #1 new in stores this week. Brubaker teams with Sean Phillips for this new series that takes the duo into strange new territory.

A funeral, a mysterious vamp that would make might make Hitchcock and Hammett blush, cult symbols, a Nazi flashback and some very gruesome killings are elements in this potent mix of crime noir and supernatural horror.

This is an old Hollywood flavored mystery with stakes that aren’t just a matter of life and death but it could mean salvation. There’s a dark magic in this book and I’m hooked.

Wolverine Versus Quentin Quire Round 1

Wolverine and the X-Men: Alpha & Omega #1 courtesy Marvel.com

Quentin Quire isn’t just an annoying, insecure brat that declared war on humanity…he’s downright sadistic in Wolverine and the X-Men Alpha & Omega #1. The battle royale between headmaster and student begins today. And I will love hating Kid Omega even more.

Brian Wood returns to Marvel with this showdown between Logan and Kid Omega to see who will ‘rule the school’ with Armor caught in Quentin’s first strike against Logan.

2011 marked the surprise return of Quentin Quire in Jason Aaron’s X-Men Schism series and then Wolverine and the X-Men series. The rebellious teen is now a critical character and I can’t imagine not having him around to tick off Logan. How can Wolverine defeat an omega level telepath? I can’t wait to see what’s next.

In the final page of issue one there’s a message from creator Brian Wood saying that Quentin needs his own book and a reflection on his early work in the X-Men family. 2000 was  his “first real work-for-hire writing job, co-writing with Warren Ellis on Generation X.”

This was when Warren Ellis led the Counter X relaunch of Marvel’s mutant titles. The Generation X lineup included Emma Frost, Jubilee, Husk, Chamber, and Monet with art by Steve Pugh. Ellis and Wood sent the kids away from the mansion on a cross-country adventure tracking down missing kids across America. Welcome back to the X-family and Marvel, Brian.

Kid Omega challenges Wolverine for dominance of the school and a fan favorite mutants is caught in the crossfire. Writer Brian Wood returns to Marvel for this clash of the mutants. Logan may be the best there is when it comes to a physical brawl but how will he defeat an omega level telepath?

Fatale #1

The modern masters of crime comics introduce a new blend of horror and noir. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips throw what looks likes some Lovecraftian terror into the story of a woman on the run, a mobster that may be a demon, and the men caught in their endless struggle.

Avengers: X-Sanction #2

Cable’s mission to wipe out the Avengers ontinues. Last issue left with Nathan holding a gun to Captain America’s head now Iron Man is Cable’s target. Can the Iron Avenger fare any better against the mutant super soldier gone rogue?

Peanuts #1

“You’re in a new monthly comic book, Charlie Brown!” Snoopy and the whole gang in new original stories and never before seen stories from the Sunday strips.

Age of X – 11 for 2011

X-Men Legacy: Age of X collection cover courtesy Marvel.com

Mike Carey’s final year on X-Men Legacy took us to the Age of X – one of my top 11 for 2011. In this reality warped tale mutants are on the verge of extinction. The survivors are making a final stand inside Fortress X against constant attack but a conspiracy within threatens mutantkind. Carey tactically reimagined favorites like Cyclops. Scott is known as Basilisk and married to Frenzy. Rogue is called Legacy because Magneto forces her to keep the memories of millions of dead mutants.

The truth behind the Age of X reality is a mindbender and impetus for Carey’s follow-up arcs. I particular loved Carey’s transformation of Frenzy in Age of X and beyond.

Uncanny X-Force Dark Angel Saga: 11 for 2011

Uncanny X-Force 17 from Marvel.com. Cover Art by Esad Ribic

The Dark Angel Saga is one of the most violent and compelling stories of 2011. Rick Remender took Wolverine’s covert team into the Age of Apocalypse in order to save Angel’s soul.

After years of struggle with the evil Archangel inside him, Warren was about to become the next embodiment of Apocalypse. I recounted the The Seeds of the Dark Angel Saga and how the once golden boy of the original X-Man had transformed into the cold, calm executor of Apocalypse’s vision.

One of the best aspects of Remender’s run this year is his redefining of Psylocke. You felt Betsy and Warren’s love deteriorate with heartbreaking moments and punches in the gut. Like Mike Carey’s portrayal of Rogue on his X-Men: Legacy, I think Rick Remender will be known for his writing of Psylocke.

If you missed the single issues The Dark Angel Saga is collected in two volumes
