Fists are flying in the latest AVX reveal from Marvel. Ryan Stegman created this Avengers Versus X-Men #1 variant showing the two team leaders in battle.

This is the press release with the image – which includes a big clue*:

“This April, the biggest names in the industry pit the largest super hero franchises against one another for the biggest war in comics history in Avengers Vs. X-Men! To celebrate this blockbuster event, Marvel has your first look at the Avengers Vs. X-Men #1 Stegman Variant by red-hot artist Ryan Stegman! The Phoenix Force is headed towards Earth and Captain America is determined to prevent the destruction of the whole world by stopping it. But when word gets to the X-Men that the Phoenix is returning, Cyclops will do anything he can to save it…including going up against Earth’s Mightiest! But who is right? Will mutantkind be saved or will the world be annihilated? Don’t miss out on all the action in Avengers Vs. X-Men #1 in comic shops worldwide and on the Marvel Comics app this April!”

When AVX was unveiled we learned that “a shocking decision related to the return of the Phoenix Force” is what triggers the conflict.

*I could be wrong but isn’t this the first time we’ve been told that Captain America is determined to stop it and Cyclops will do anything to save it? Scott has demonstrated he’s willing to make sacrifices and take drastic steps to protect his fellow mutants so could this mean the Phoenix is targetting Hope?

Wolverine the AVX Peacemaker?

Wolverine – the peacemaker? Marvel reveals a gripping image of the X-Man/Avenger caught in the middle of his leaders. Logan is seen reaching out as Cyclops and Captain America fight on the cover of New Avengers #24 a tie-in to the Avengers Versus X-Men Event debuting April.

The official press release:

“This April, as the flames of war are stoked by the impending arrival of the Phoenix Force, the New Avengers have received the call to arms by Captain America to go to war against the X-Men. Except where does the loyalty of Wolverine lie? Find out in New Avengers #24 from the blockbuster creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato!”

Top 5 for 1/18/12

Batman #5 courtesy DC Comics

  Batman #5

Deep under Gotham City is the Council of Owls’ ultimate trap and Batman fell right into it. Batman versus the Talon in a deadly labyrinth.

  Steed and Mrs. Peel #1

The Avengers (not Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but England’s most stylish spies) are back in a new story by comic book superstar Grant Morrison. John Steed and Emma Peel reunite when Tara King is kidnapped by a mystery organization. The dashing duo and their mashup of sci-fi, spy and crime stories made The Avengers one of the most iconic shows in television history.

Avengers #21

X-Woman Storm is now an Avenger. The team needs every hero it can get against the combined forces of H.A.M.M.E.R. Hydra, The Hand and AIM under the leadership of Norman Osborn.

  Prophet #21

Image Comics throws some indy cred into the fuel to make a 90’s sci-fi concept blast off again. In the far future mankind has devolved into primitives and become prey for alien invaders. John Prophet awakens from cryosleep to wake up and restart the human race. Brandon Graham and Simon Roy take their European sci-fi style on the 90’s Rob Liefeld creation. The Zanadu Comic Book Round Table chose this as the first book to discuss at the next gathering on February 8th – the geek counterpart to O’s book club!

  Generation Hope #15

Mindwiped Sebastian Shaw’s rescue and return to Utopia triggers new splits and fires up old grudges among the X-Men. Emma Frost has some serious explaining to do. Can this old enemy really become a hero now that he’s a blank slate?

Iron Fist Feels Phoenix Force?

  “Say What!?

New Avenges #25 courtesy Marvel.com, Comics Newsarama Exclusive

Comics Newsarama received an exclusive image and preview from Marvel that will be blowing minds and buzzing message boards today:

New Avengers #25 is being called an Avengers Versus X-Men tie-in where “Iron Fist Discovers The Shocking Connection Between Himself And The Cosmic Phoenix Force.”

Here’s what we know: The Phoenix Force is coming to Earth in search of a new human host. The entity has previously been attracted to mutants with Jean Grey being the most infamous host. A shocking decision related to the return of the Phoenix is what ignites the war between the super teams. I’ll have to do some digging but the entity has been hosted by non-mutants (Alan Davis’ Excalibur run) and aliens like the Shiar.

This image is definitely a surprise – maybe New Avengers will be of an exploration of possible candidates as host for the Phoenix?

A Legend Joins T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.

THUNDER Agents cover courtesy DC Comics

DC Comics recruits a legend for the modern version of a classic concept. Nick Spencer and Wes Craig welcome Walter Simonson on board T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #3. Spencer talked exclusively with DC’s The Source.

“If it weren’t for Walter Simonson, I wouldn’t be writing (or maybe even still reading) comics — and that’s no overstatement,” Spencer told THE SOURCE. “He’s been my favorite creator pretty much the entirety of my life, so please believe me when I say working with him on T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #3 was the biggest honor of my career so far.”

Since I enjoyed Spencer’s Ultimate Comics: X-Men, my comic book guy recommended T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and I’m so glad he did! A great book!

Fantastic Four Reboot

20th Century Fox is moving forward with a reboot of Marvel’s First Family. Variety reports that Josh Trank is the front runner to direct a next big screen appearance of The Fantastic Four.

Fox is reportedly waiting to see how Trank’s upcoming film Chronicle does at the box office before making an official offer. Michael Green of Green Lantern is penning the script. Chronicle follows the story of three high school friends who gain super powers.

Dark Horizons makes a great point that Fox had success with the X-Men: First Class reboot so there’s an opportunity to start over with this franchise. Here’s the Chronicle trailer to give you an idea of what might be…

X-Factor Reunion Pt 2

I experienced an enjoyable sense of Deja Vu this week from X-Factor #230. It’s a reboot event and some mutants are left without a team for post-Schism dodgeball! Rogue (via writer Mike Carey) brought Havok, Polaris and Rachel Summers back from deep space. Rachel signed up to teach at the Jean Grey School. Havok and Polaris seemingly had no place (or X-title) to call home until this week when Logan brings the long-suffering lovers to X-Factor Investigations.

I could help but think back to the aftermath of the Muir Island Saga when a second X-Men title was born (and the original X-Men left X-Factor for these books) and X-Force, Excalibur regrouped back in the early 90’s. I was an ignorant youth back then when I thought ‘they just put all the leftover characters in this other title that doesn’t have anybody!’

X-Factor #71 courtesy Marvel.com

Havok, Polaris, Madox, Wolfsbane, Quicksilver and Guido (I’m the Strong Guy so call me Strong Guy) became the mutant team working for the U.S. government. I was a huge fan of Peter David from The Incredible Hulk so I gave this team of what I thought were leftovers a try – and it was perfect.

Peter David and Larry Stroman took these refugees from every corner of the mutant-verse to create a team that was compelling and often hilarious.  David transformed background mutants into major characters I cheered for and cared about.

This X-Factor faced Mister Sinister’s Nasty Boys, Helle’s Belles and even went up against the Hulk and the Pantheon in the “War and Pieces” crossover with The Incredible Hulk. The government team were part of the X-cutioner’s Song crossover with their mutant cousins. Joe Quesada later became the artist and co-created Random, an X-Factor enemy turned ally.

Earlier I recommended this is the time to join or rejoin the drama and fun at X-Factor Investigation with this week’s #230 but should go back in time to see the rebirth of X-Factor when Alex and Lorna first joined the motley mutants.

There’s a good reason why they call it X-Factor: visionaries because Peter David is brilliant at taking the oddest assortment of characters and evolving them into a compelling “family” you want to be part of.

AVX Cyclops Hawkeye

AVX image courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel triggered a fan frenzy this week with teaser images to promote Avengers Versus X-Men.

This final image pits X-Men Extinction Team Leader Cyclops against Hawkeye, soon be leader of the Secret Avengers, by Esad Ribic.

This is a matchup I’d really like to see because both men are hardened leaders who think strategically but I give the edge to Cyclops on this possible fight.
