Age of Apocalypse Ongoing

The X-Men have been drawn into the nightmare reality that is the Age of Apocalypse time and again. Today Marvel revealed a new series set in the horrific alternative timeline that spins out of The Dark Angel Saga in Uncanny X-Force #18 which wraps today.

David Lapham and Roberto De La Torre are the creative team on Age of Apocalypse launching in March.

“We start sort of spinning out of Uncanny X-Force. There are events that happen there that we directly fall out of. Basically, we open with Weapon X, who’s the Big Bad Overlord of the Age of Apocalypse world, and he’s just sort of wiped out the last enclave of humanity.” Lapham said in today’s presser.

The roster of characters includes alternative versions of William Styker, Graydon Creed, Donald Pierce and Bolivar Trask – all mutant hating X-Men enemies in the Marvel universe but are could they be seen as heroes in this dystopian world ruled by Apocalypse?

Lapham confirmed the AoA versions of Wolverine, Jean Grey and Sabretooth will be part of the series is about “humans versus the mutants.”

The Age of Apocalypse is a cool place to visit but an ongoing series? I love the AoA Jean Grey, she’s ruthless and definitely Wolverine’s match. What do you think? The adventures begin this March.

Nick Spencer at Emerald City Comicon

Ultimate Comics X-Men #1 courtesy Marvel.com

Morning Glories creator Nick Spencer is coming back to Emerald City Comicon in 2012. I’m a huge fan of Spencer’s writing on Ultimate Comics: X-Men and Thunder Agents.

Last year at ECCC Marvel announced Spencer’s exclusivity with the publisher yet allowing him to continue on Morning Glories  and Thunder Agents. I think it was the first time a major publisher make a big announcement like that at our hometown con so I thought that was very cool.

Welcome back Nick, I’ve got some issues waiting for your autograph! Emerald City Comicon is March 30th-April 1st in Seattle.

Dark Knight Broken!

The Dark Knight Rises teaser poster courtesy Warner Brothers

An ominous new poster for The Dark Knight Rises that may reveal a crucial plot point: Bane is walking away from a shattered Bat mask with the slogan: The Legend Ends.

The 6 minute IMAX prologue was screened to select critics earlier this week.  The prologue was an action packed opener featuring Tom Hardy as Bane much like the opening of The Dark Knight showcased the Joker.

Christopher Nolan told Empire this new film is set 8 year after The Dark Knight with Batman in a weaker state and “with Bane, we wanted to give Batman a challenge he hasn’t had before. With our choice of villain and our choice of story we’re testing Batman both physically as well as mentally.”

The one-two punch of the new poster and Twitter image make it seem like Nolan will follow the Knightfall storyline in which Bane breaks Batman’s spine and Bruce Wayne is forced to quit.    In comic book version there was Dick Grayson and Azrael (who temporarily took on the famous cape and cowl) were Bruce Wayne’s possible replacements. There’s no one in the cast list so could it be the Nolan will end the series with Batman broken?

One question still out there. Is Bane working for Ra’s Al Ghul? This film is said to come full circle with Batman Begins. Batman let his ex-mentor Ra’s Al Ghul/Henri Ducard played by Liam Neeson crash to his death in the first film. In the final film Liam Neeson is listed in the cast and actor Josh Pence is listed as playing a younger version but is this in flashback or in the present? In the comics Ra’s Al Ghul resurrects himself via Lazarus Pits hidden around the globe. And I still wonder about my contention that Marion Cotillard could be playing Talia Al Ghul and she is the secret mastermind and Bane her enforcer.

STAR WARS Comics

Star Wars: Art: Comics courtesy Abrams Books  Star Wars was the first movie I saw in a movie theater. I’ve never been the same since! Maybe that’s why I can forgive George Lucas for anyway he wants to evolve his movies. I had the landspeeder, droid factory, an army of action figures and comic books!

Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comics then Dark Horse Comics was the force behind new series set before, during and after the 6 movie chapters. There’s a beautiful new book I’ve been tempted to buy for myself (it would make a great gift) from Abrams Books.

Star Wars cover art from Marvel Comics

Star Wars: Art: Comics celebrates the marriage of the beloved film franchise and the graphic art of comics. Inside you’ll find comic strips and book art from previous series and new commissions from some of the biggest names in the industry. All the art was selected and curated by George Lucas who gave Comic Book Resources this preview, which includes interviews with the artists on the new commissions about their Star Wars inspirations.

From Star Wars: Art: Comics by Arthur Adams, courtesy Abrams Books

I wanted to share one of the most eye-catching selections by one of my all time favorite creators. Arthur Adams (one of my favorite X-Men artists) knows how to draw hot babes and ugly monsters so it’s fitting Adams brings Leia’s metal bikini wearing hotness and Jabba the Hutt’s throne room to graphic life.

In Defense of The Defenders

Defenders #1 courtesy Marvel.com

If at first you don’t succeed, relaunch with a hot creative team after a huge crossover event. Matt Fraction and Terry Dodson made mutant magic on Uncanny X-Men. Fraction’s Fear Itself epic unleashed supernatural forces on earth courtesy of The Serpent.

Now Doctor Strange recruits a new team to face threats unleashed by the Asgardian God of Fear . Namor the Submariner, Red She Hulk, Iron Fist and Silver Surfer join the Doctor’s mission against mystical monsters threatening the planet.

When you’ve got teams of Avengers and the X-Men plus the Fantastic Four, why does the world need The Defenders? I’ve always been puzzled why the “non-team” keeps getting reboots.

Fraction joins a fraternity of writers including Roy Thomas, David Anthony Kraft, Steve Gerber, Kurt Busiek, Keith Giffen and Joe Casey that have crafted the adventures of a team of outsider/lone wolf types.

Doctor Strange, Hulk and Namor are the most iconic members that have appeared in most versions of the series. My favorites have always been Valkyrie and Hellcat. The steely noble warrior woman and the sexy crimefighter were odd couple that worked great together.

Defenders #63 courtesy Marvel.com

My earliest memory of The Defenders is their most outrageous storylines. You could say Kraft’s Defender for a Day was ahead of its time. Long before reality shows took over television, this story showed how slick producers and wannabes could exploit and tarnish the most heroic ideas.

In Defenders #62-#65 a promoter exposes the team to the world and announces a membership drive and videotapes the whole thing for a documentary. Some of the lamest back burner characters and villains invaded the Defenders home hoping to join the team. It was great fun with hilarious moments especially from the Hulk. The story is infamous now but as a little kid I loved seeing so many costumed characters all packed into one issue. And if Captain Ultra has a shot maybe I could be a Defender?

Does the world really need another variation of the Defenders? Maybe not. But with this creative team and membership it’s definitely worth finding out.
