X-MEN Annual Reveals ResurrXion Origin?

Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 courtesy Marvel

ResurrXion is the big X-Men even in 2017 following Inhumans vs. X-Men.

But is the seed of ResurrXion and savior of a doomed mutant race found in this week’s Uncanny X-Men Annual #1?

Over the years, Annuals seem like bonus issues that may be good reads but not critical to an ongoing or future storyline.

You may want to run back to your comic book shop if you skipped this issue thinking “it’s just an annual.”

Writer Cullen Bunn re-teams with artist Ken Lashley for a story that resolves a big event from the current Uncanny X-Men run and may be even bigger for next year’s entire X-line.

Mutants are dying from exposure to the Terrigen Cloud. The disease is called M-Pox. It was a harsh new reality for mutants after Secret Wars. Terrigen creates new Inhumans and kills mutants.

Magneto’s pro-active squad was searching for a cure or protection while fighting off any new threats to mutants.

Death of X is revealing what happened to Cyclops and Emma Frost when they tried to save mutants from this new genetic threat. Inhumans vs X-Men will be a full blown war for survival.

But Marvel teases ResurrXion for Spring 2017 with several new X-books.

Is the key to mutant survival teased in this week’s annual?

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not read Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 yet stop reading now and get back to the comic book shop.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Death of an X-Man was the tease. The Dark Riders were killing mutant healers who might be attempting to save any M-Pox infected mutants. Magneto’s Uncanny X-Men team failed to save Joshua Foley aka Elixir.

Psylocke left the team after Magneto’s treachery. Only Monet and Sabretooth are still with him. The trio is at the Foley’s grave to find he’s clawed his way out. The mutant with healing power somehow resurrected himself.

Elixir was co-created by Nunzio DeFillipis, Christina Weir and Keron Grant during their New Mutants run which evolved into the second New X-Men.

Ironically Foley turns up to revisit one of the most tragic moments in mutant history from the first New X-Men run. Genosha is the island nation where mutants suffered as slaves. It became a haven for mutants. Then Cassandra Nova (Charles Xavier’s twin) unleashed an army of Sentinels wiping out 16 million mutants.

Elixir’s healing power has evolved to omega level. He’s using it to torture the dead Dark Riders who killed him with biological manipulation over and over. He wants to resurrect the millions and millions of dead mutants in the ashes of Genosha. Problem?!

Magneto, Monet and Sabretooth stop Josh and take him to a treatment center for infected mutants and we learn the price and risks of Elixir’s evolved abilities. Josh’s healing power has advanced to wield power of life and death as he appears to draw energy from the living to heal the dying.

The big moment: Josh did cure M-Pox infected mutants.

Magneto takes Elixir to Xorn’s temple in Tibet to learn to control his evolved power and deal with his emotional guilt and pain.

Jeff Lemire and Charles Soule are crafting Death of X and Inhumans vs X-Men but did Cullen Bunn just reveal the source of ResurrXion which blows up in 2017?

And what’s in a color? Elixir is gold skinned as he wields his healing power. If you’ve been reading Death of X, you saw Cyclops recruit a mutant with a “gold” power in his plan to save mutants. Coincidence?
