The Joker has been a man without a face since DC Comics rebooted The New 52. Batman’s greatest enemy had his face carved off in Detective Comics #1. A year later Joker launches a horrific campaign against the Dark Knight and his allies in Batman: Death of the Family.

DC Comics Editor Bob Harris share this first look at an earlier Joker designed by Andy Clarke and teases a story of the rogue’s past:

“During Villains Month, witness an untold tale of The Joker that takes place before any of the #1 issues in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. Written by Andy Kubert and illustrated by Andy Clarke, this unique one-shot will not only hint at a possible origin for The Joker, but will also feature the origin of a classic Batman villain who folks might not suspect as having ties to the Clown Prince of Crime.”

Villains Month goes across every DC Comics book this September.
