X-Men: Battle of the Atom will kick off in September with a special issue by Brian Michael Bendis and Frank Cho then run through the core titles (All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine and the X-Men and Brian Wood’s X-Men) then wrap in a final bookend by Jason Aaron and a “mystery artist.”

X-Men from the future including Kate Bishop, Deadpool, Lady Xorn, Ice Beast and more all designed by the legendary Arthur Adams arrive in the present. This Future Team’s mission is a direct response to the Beast bringing the original X-Men from the past in the present. These future X-Men will target the teens (now at the Jean Grey and Charles Xavier Schools) and the objective is to send them back by any means necessary.

“The story itself hinges on the All-New X-Men and whether or not they need to  be sent back to their home time,” X-Men Senior Editor Nick Lowe tells Marvel.com.  “This causes the X-Men of the past, present and future to pick sides.”

“Jason Aaron came to us with this [idea],” said Brian Michael Bendis, “Jason pitched big and he scored. Jason came to everyone with the  bare essentials of this idea and everybody got really excited about it because  it was all the things we liked about the X-Men. It spoke to the legacy of the  entire franchise while at the same time focusing on the future.”

Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel launch a brand new X-Men #1 next month with an all female team.

In the last volume of X-Men Jubilee was transformed into a vampire in Curse of the Mutants and joined a cabal of fellow undead trying to control their blood lust. The fireworks generating mutant turned vampire will back with the Children of the Atom. Brian Wood told a fan on Comic Book Resources X-Position how he will approach the mutated Jubilee.

“I’ll be the first to admit I struggled with the fact that I would be writing a vampire Jubilee — I was hoping to be able to write the “classic” one but it was not in the cards. But we, my editor Jeanine [Schaefer] and I, figured the way to go is Continue reading Brian Wood on the X-MEN Vampire

This will likely increase speculation that Omar Cy is definitely playing Lucas Bishop, the X-Man from the future with energy projection powers who came back in time to prevent the horrific world he inherited. Bishop recently turned up as a villain in the new Uncanny X-Force.

This also means the new film will take story elements from two different comic book eras. The original Days of Future Past story by Chris Claremont in the 1980’s featured a group of X-Men in prison camps after Sentinels have slaughtered most of the world’s mutants. The survivors send one of their own in the past to prevent a single act that leads to this dark future.

Bishop was introduced in the 1990’s as a member of the X.S.E. (Xavier Security Enforcers.) Lucas Bishop was a mutant cop who tracked down evil mutants in the future who was pulled back in time while pursuing the villain Trevor Fitzroy and was trapped in the past with the X-Men who inspired him. Havok has been elevated to Marvel flagship book Uncanny Avengers but he’s missing from the next X-Men movie. Alex Summers was recruited by Captain America and Wolverine to lead the new team made of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and mutants. Alex is stepping out of his big brother’s shadow and forging a new hope for mutants. Scott Summers killed Professor X while under the influence of the Phoenix Force and has since formed a mutant team dedicated to the mutant revolution.

Both Summers brothers appear to be out of the next X-Men film. The cast of the original trilogy (Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Daniel Cudmore) will join Continue reading No Cyclops, No Havok in X-Men: Days of Future Past
