AVENGERS Gets Bigger!

A new era for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes begins this week. Writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Jermone Opena are blowing up the team with bigger roster and bigger mission.

Jonathan Hickman and Editor Tom Brevoort revealed the new mission for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and what to expect from this week’s premier issue and beyond on Marvel.com.

“We will see the back story of how Iron Man and Captain America have been quietly building a contingency plan for the day that comes in issue #1,” Hickman teases of the huge event that requires a bigger team that will reflect our modern world.

“One of the first things we all agreed on is that the roster should look more like the world. So far we’ve seen the biggest and most iconic characters, but as we reach issues #7 and #8, we’ll see more new characters and characters we’re reviving or recreating. Eventually there will be 24 characters. 12 will be either female or minority characters,” said Hickman of the growing roster.

In January Hickman and artist Steve Epting launch a new New Avengers – a new version of the Illuminati. This new secret cabal working behind the scenes will be Black Panther, Iron Man, Doctor Strange Black Bolt, Namor, Reed Richards and Beast.

“It’s about the guys who quietly, secretly run the world. It’s thematically much different than Avengers. The plan I’ve worked out is that the Avengers are the utopian Avengers, the ideal ones we want, whereas the New Avengers are real world, they live in the dark, apocalyptic world as it is,” revealed Hickman.

“The books will work in tandem. You don’t have to read both, but they are two sides of the same coin. Two different stories,” he added.

Some of the most surprising and exciting additions to the new team are New Mutants Sam Guthrie and Roberto Da Costa.

“You’ll get an issue where Cannonball and Sunspot get to spend time with Captain America,” Hickman revealed, “I’ve always really liked them. I wish it was more complicated than that. I pitched a Bobby and Sam in Mojoworld book, and somehow it got made.”

One reason I love Sam and Bobby getting this “promotion” is that they never got to rise up to true X-Men status.

“Cannonball and Sunspot are at least chronologically younger characters. It’s always good to have those types of figures in Avengers to bring a fresh viewpoint. That said, they’re also established Marvel characters,” Brevoort said, “When Brian Bendis brought Luke Cage and Spider-Woman into the Avengers, they weren’t the most popular characters, but they had legitimacy. I think it will be the same thing with Cannonball and Sunspot.”

“When we get to 24 characters, their will be several subgroups of characters, and one tier will be a group of younger, more idealistic people like Cannonball and Sunspot,” Hickman explained.

Hickman explained the leadership hierarchy of this new Avengers.

“Cap is in charge, of course, and he has two vice-captains in Captain Marvel and Iron Man. For bigger stuff, it splits into three teams. There are other factions within that, but generally, that’s the command structure. In New Avengers, they all think they’re in charge and none of them are,” explains Hickman.

Hickman confirmed Avengers will start with the 3 big arcs then 3 stand-alone stories and he’s creating new villains. Mr. Fantastic and Beast will be on New Avengers. Hyperion will be part of the team. Eden Fesi of Secret Warriors will be in the Avengers.

Hickman confirmed in an earlier story that Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, would be in the series and that the team will start with up to 18 members.

Avengers #1 hits this week #2 arrives this month. New Avengers #1 and #2 arrive in January.

NEW AVENGERS #1 Preview! Black Panther Takes Command!

New Avengers #1 courtesy Marvel

In 2013 Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting assemble a new Illuminati to save the world! Some of Marvel’s most brilliant minds gather to prevent our universe’s collision with another universe. Black Panther leads Mister Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Iron Man, Beast and Namor against a swarm of invading parallel realities.

Marvel shared new Steve Epting art from inside New Avengers #1 in which Wakanda becomes ground zero for the invasion.

Black Panther’s homeland is recovering from Namor’s invasion in Avengers vs. X-Men. T’Challa is coping with the end of his marriage to Storm and the destruction of his country.

T’Challa is a formidable warrior but a brilliant scientist too. Black Panther refused to join the original Illuminanti but this time he’s leading the secret cabal of Marvel’s biggest brains.

New Avengers #1 arrives January 2, 2013. I’m thrilled to see Black Panther back on the front burner in comics and hope this is a sign T’Challa may appear in a future Avengers movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Search for Star-Lord

Guardians of the Galaxy #1 courtesy Marvel

Marvel is aiming for the stars for their next big comic book and comic book movie franchise! James Gunn is reportedly been hired to direct Guardians of the Galaxy. Now the search for a star to play the leader: Peter Quill aka Star-Lord.

Joel Edgerton, Lee Pace, Jack Huston, Eddie Redmayne, Jim Sturgess are in contention along with Garrett Hedlund and James Marsden as options according to Deadline.

How important is Guardians of the Galaxy to Marvel? Brian Michael Bendis. The writer of Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man and now All-New X-Men is writing a brand new Guardians of the Galaxy series with superstar artist Steve McNiven and Iron Man is joining the team.

Peter Quill is the son of a human mother and alien father raised on Earth who leads a ragtag group of aliens on adventures in deep space. In the comics the Guardians and Avengers have worked together so expect a cinematic tie-in, especially given the appearance of Thanos.

Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) matches the look of Peter Quill but my gut goes for Garrett Hedlund (Tron) because once he becomes Star-Lord he gets a little grittier.

I’m still hoping Dwayne Johnson will play Drax the Destroyer.

Uncanny Avengers #2 Review

Uncanny Avengers #2 courtesy Marvel

The Children of the Atom may have won over the hearts of two of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but they have a new enemy that is pure evil and possibly the most powerful new villain in the Marvel Universe. Welcome to the Uncanny Avengers.

Here’s what you need to know: Captain America wants you Alex Summers! The Star-Spangled Avenger asks Havok to lead a team of human and mutants heroes. A mutant terrorist attacks New York City. Havok, Cap, Wolverine and Thor fight to stop the madman and save lives. Scarlet Witch and Rogue are attacked by a mysterious squad of freaks at Professor Xavier’s grave. The Red Skull has been reborn and he’s stolen Xavier’s brain.

Rick Remender and John Cassaday continue the shock and awe in this week’s issue #2 picking right up where the last issue left off. The Red Skull is using the Professor’s brain as a weapon to inflame anti-mutant rage. The creators deliver more “oh —-!” moments involving the Red Skull and his manipulations.

I’m really excited by the way Remender portrays Rogue from her clash with Scarlet Witch, her discovery of Xavier’s remains and her recollection of joining the X-Men.

This book is definitely working for me and I’m excited for what’s next. Remender and Cassaday have me hooked!

New Avengers Era Ends

New Avengers #1 courtesy Marvel

This week’s New Avengers #34 is the final issue of the Brian Michael Bendis era. 8 years ago Bendis took over Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and made me love the Avengers again!

Avengers Disassembled: Here’s where it all began again. He blew up Avengers mansion, blew away team members and made prodigal fans like me take notice and remember why we love Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It was more than stunts for shock value. There was great drama and emotion as Steve and Tony mourned friends and coped with the truth that one of their own had become the greatest enemy. The team ended but the call would go out again for heroes to assemble!

Enter Spider-Woman: Jessica Drew was lifted out of the comic book void and right into the middle of the action in Breakout in New Avengers #1. Bendis made us fall madly in love with the reborn heroine then pulled the rug out of from under us! Turns out this Jessica was really the Skrull Empress and mastermind of Secret Invasion. The real Jessica came back during that epic and started rebuilding her reputation and life. There were huge action packed events that were building blocks, plots within plots that led to bigger events. Jessica was at the center of them all.

New Avengers Annual #1 courtesy Marvel

Luke Cage Is The MAN: Bendis must have loved the Power Man & Iron Fist series too because he put Cage on the front burner. Luke’s comeback started in the excellent Alias series when he became the love interest of Jessica Jones. In Breakout Luke answered Captain America’s call for help and soon Cap made Luke leader of the New Avengers.  The course of true love never runs smooth but Luke, Jessica and their baby became the tortured heart of the series for me.

The Illumanati: A brilliant concept! Turns out there was a secret society of super heroes that had played key roles in major Marvel events through history. The covert alliance of Iron Man, Professor X, Namor, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt and Reed Richards would eventually shatter and ghosts of the past would come back to haunt them.

Love to HATE Norman Osborn: One of Spidey’s greatest enemies became Marvel’s most powerful villain. The former Green Goblin’s rise to power began when he started running the Thunderbolts. In the aftermath of Secret Invasion Osborn seized power with control of the Avengers and SHIELD, which he renamed HAMMER. The Dark Reign began with a madman disguised as a hero (the Iron Patriot) with his own Dark Avengers and Dark X-Men. Osborn’s obsession for power led to an invasion of Asgard in SIEGE.and that was his downfall – and we were reminded just how bat—- crazy Norman really is!

New Avengers #1 courtesy Marvel

Who’s An Avenger? Bendis said what a lot of fans had been saying for years – if the Avengers are the best and most powerful heroes then why aren’t Marvel’s biggest guns on the team! He did something about it! Wolverine, Luke Cage, Thing and Doctor Strange were assembled along with the tragic powerhouse, the Sentry. Daredevil, Iron Fist would later join the team. Hawkeye’s lost love Mockingbird even returned.

I could go on and on but I will end here with a huge thank you to Brian Michael Bendis for an incredible run and for making me love the Avengers again!

New Avengers #34 is out this week! Thank you and good luck with the X-Men!

Help Hawkeye & Matt Fraction Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

Hawkeye #2 courtesy Marvel.com

You should be buying Matt Fraction and David Aja’s new Hawkeye series because it’s just that good! If you need another reason here’s one: Hawkeye #7 will be a the first of a two-part Hurricane Sandy Relief story in which the Avenging Archer and his sidekick Kate Bishop (of the Young Avengers) help disaster victims in Brooklyn and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The Hawkeye writer revealed the upcoming storyline to MTV Geek.

“So many regular people did so much good, it felt like Hawkeye is an appropriate place to do a Sandy story,” said Fraction.

The writer will donate his royalties for scripting Hawkeye #7 to the American Red Cross. The more copies you buy, the more money Fraction will donate.

The always clever Fraction admits this is a big risk but so worth it “…it occured to me that if this is too successful that this could be the most painful check that I ever write…but c’mon, make it hurt!”

Here’s a first look at the cover of Hawkeye #7 courtesy MTV Geek.

Hawkeye is one of the best books Marvel is publishing. I’m a huge fan of Matt Fraction – one of the greatest creators to meet at a comicon. He has always been generous with this time talking to fans. After incredible runs on Uncanny X-Men, The Mighty Thor and Invincible Iron Man Fraction just took over Fantastic Four. I look forward to adding an autographed Hawkeye #7 to my collection.

Hawkeye #7 arrives January 16, 2013. Guest artists Steve Lieber and Jesse Hamm will join Fraction for the story.
