Marvel faced the fans at the Avengers Now panel at San Diego Comic Con following last week’s triple shot of announcements with big changes for the big three Avengers.
Sam Wilson will become the All-New Captain America #1 by Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen. A woman will wield the hammer in a brand new Thor #1 by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman. Tony Stark will get a change of armor and attitude in Superior Iron Man #1 by Tom Taylor and Yildiray Cinar.
Rick Remender said Wilson will “earn the mantle” in Captain America #25. A new Nomad (Ian, the son of Armin Zola from Dimension Z) will be new sidekick and Steve Rogers, now in his 90’s and without the Super Soldier Serum, will be an advisor.
Marvel announced Captain America and The Mighty Avengers by Al Ewing & Luke Ross coming in November. No word on if this is a brand new series or a renaming of the current Mighty Avengers by Ewing.
Thor #1 with a woman in the title role comes after writer Jason Aaron “building to a time when Thor couldn’t pick up the hammer.”
The new Thor is someone from the supporting cast of many female characters. Not even Odin knows how she will be.
“He draws the hell out of some Frost Giants” Jason Aaron on artist Russell Dauterman, who was discovered at Comic Con.
A fan asked if the soon to be proven unworthy Thor Odinson will have his own book. Aaron said Odinson be in the new Thor title not his own book and said he will not be completely powerless without the hammer.
The other big new announcement was Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #1 in November by writers Kieron Gillen and Margerite Bennet with Phil Jimenez and Stephanie Hans on art. The new series follows Thor and Loki: The Tenth Realm. It was revealed in Original Sin that Angela is the half-sister of the Asgardian Gods.
When asked if this new book means Angela is not the new Thor, Aaron responded, “she can have two books, right?”
In Superior Iron Man, Tony Stark moves to San Francisco with big plans for the city. After unleashing Extremis on the public produces new super powered humans. Editor Nick Lowe said Tony will play a big part in Axis and that what Jonathan Hickman (Avengers) has planned will bring some answers.
Deathlok #1 by Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, Punisher) and Mike Perkins “leading mercenary operative unaware of his true identity as a weapon of war.”
The big storyline in Asia in Avengers World by Nick Spencer comes to a head in #11 and introduces a new Chinese superteam and Euroforce led by Black Knight.
