Mister Sinister returned in Extraordinary X-Men #4 to deliver a shocking twist in the Mutant/Inhuman conflict.

Writer Jeff Lemire gave X-fans a “gift” in the Christmas week book and final issue of the year.

The mutant race is on the fast track to extinction again. The Terrigen Mists creating new Inhumans are killing and sterilizing mutants. Cyclops attacked the Inhumans and now he’s been  declared dead.

In this week’s chapter, Ororo, Old Man Logan, Jean and Iceman went to rescue Nightcrawler, Colossus and Magik from Sinister and his new Marauders.

But is Sinister the “salvation” for the mutants?

Before we continue this issue’s big reveal and what it could mean here’s a…

SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not read Extraordinary X-Men #4 stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Mutants have always been Mister Sinister’s favorite test subjects in his twisted genetic experiments. Nathaniel Essex (his original name) has manipulated the X-Men, especially Cyclops, for decades.

In this week’s issue we learned Sinister is experimenting on mutants to save them, often subjecting them to massive doses of Terrigen Mist. Essex believes he can create a genetically superior mutant (a homo-superior-superior) that can withstand the Terrigen Mist. Can Essex make Mutant and Inhuman DNA co-exist in one body?

Sinister claims he’s trying to “perfect” mutants and after several failed experiments he’s found one test subject who would not die:

On the final page of this issue…Cyclops is revealed.

Scott Summers emerges from the Mist with his iconic visors flaring up with his optic blasts and half his body made of what appear to be scales.

So Cyclops is not really dead?

Did Scott willing submit to be Sinister’s guinea pig?

Is Cyclops the next stage of Mutant/Inhuman evolution as a genetic war is building up between the races?

What are his powers?

After years of Cyclops being portrayed as a villain, killer of Professor X, terrorist, revolutionary – is Scott’s road to redemption paved…with the aide of Mister Sinister?

Where’s Emma Frost? No one has even mentioned the telepath and former co-team leader. Is Scott’s ex-lover MIA, dead or the next Mutant/Inhuman hybrid?

What do you think of this new genetic twist and potential new role for Cyclops?
