DC Comics brought out the star power behind recent breakout hits at the DC Champions of Justice panel at Emerald City Comicon.
Moderator Hank Kanalz asked Batgirl creative team Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr about how they came together.
Stewart was committed to Fight Club 2 and for co-writer, the only choice was longtime friend Brenden Fletcher. For art Stewart wanted a woman and recruited Tarr after seeing her on Tumblr. She had never drawn sequential pages before but had “sass” needed for their vision. Tarr revealed how for a long time she didn’t know the DC mystery project was Batgirl and she’s taking on sole art duties with issue 41 in June.
Fletcher called this week’s issue 40 as our “statement issue” to make Barbara talk about the darkness and beyond it as she literally faced herself, making her a better crimefighter, a better Batgirl,
Issue 41 is “kind of like our first real issue,” Stewart said with the book going towards more fun stories “unburdened by the past.”
Fletcher will launch a brand new Black Canary series with artist Annie Wu in June and looks to establish Dinah as the most dangerous martial artists in DC Comics calling it a “kung fu rock and roll road trip” while she’s on tour with a band and “it all ties back to Dinah’s origins.”
As Annie Wu’s art, we will “never see Dinah in fresh fishnets again!” pointing to the torn fishnets and band aids in the preview art.
DC Entertainment Master Class: Art History is scheduled for tomorrow at 3pm with Babs Tarr and Ben Templesmith.
