2018 Pacific Northwest Geek Guide

There’s something in the air and water – or maybe it’s all the tech? We have an abundance of cons for comics, sci-fi and anime that bring thousands and thousands of fans together in the Pacific Northwest. We even get to the chance to see cool new exhibits (Yes, that’s Spidey swinging across Seattle! Big news below!) and celebrities ready to greet their devoted fans.

2018 will bring a major comic book experience along with anticipated events to bring out the geek in all of us. Even if you don’t know your Marvel from DC, Star Wars from Trek, Warcraft from Destiny or Sailor Moon from Pokemon – you can still be of part of the fun. Even if it’s just to see all those crazy costumes.

DARK HERON Returns To EMERALD CITY COMICON

A Seattle born superhero shares her code-name with a beer crafted with comics inspiration. She’s back for a milestone event.

After crazy fun days of cosplaying, celebrity sightings and comic book collecting at Emerald City Comicon fans may need a break with a brew. Dark Heron returns to save the day.

ReedPOP and Fremont Brewing of Seattle, Washington announced they are bringing back the Dark Heron, an exclusive brew created as the Official Beer of Emerald City Comicon 2017. The Dark Heron will be rebooted with a new flavor and new artwork provided by local Seattle cartoonist, Jen Vaughn. The IPA was created to tap into the expressive spirit of the heroine and the comic fans who will swarm Seattle for ECCC’s 15th anniversary. HORIZON Creator BRANDON THOMAS At ECCC

A new science fiction comic book series from Skybound blasts off this summer taking a young writer’s career into a higher orbit.

Horizon by Brandon Thomas with artists Juan Gedeon and Frank Martin was one of several new creator-owned projects announced at Image Expo in Seattle. We caught up with Thomas at Emerald City Comicon to talk about the origin of the book, his journey to this big moment and what fans can expect from his book.

A fan-favorite comic book hero and writer are soaring to comic book success.

At Emerald City Comicon we talked with rising star Jody Houser following huge news:

Just before the Seattle event Valiant Entertainment announced Faith, her four-part limited series was becoming an ongoing title then Houser was announced as writer of a new book in a DC Comics imprint.

It’s the superstar rise of Valiant’s Faith that’s earning Houser huge attention from fans and the industry.

Faith Herbert is the breakout character from the pages of Harbinger who launched into solo stardom this past January. The sold-out Faith #1 is going to be reprinted for a fifth time and the limited series becomes an ongoing book in July. The plus size superhero continues to win new readers and mainstream attention making her a pop culture phenomenon.

The double shot of exciting career news comes as fans packed panels at the Seattle event to hear the writer talk about Faith, body diversity in books and her “first year in comics” as one panel was dubbed. Emerald City Comicon attracts stunning cosplayers from across the Pacific Northwest. One cosplayer will now take on the world.

Last night in front of a packed crowd at the Washington State Convention Center at the big event ReedPOP named the winner of the 2016 Western Championships of Cosplay:

Seattle is famous for coffee, rock and roll, rain and the pioneering spirit of independent comics. Seattle indie artist invite you to what they hail as “a comic book art show for the future.”

Local fans and visitors are invited to a one-night free event celebrating the spirit of independent artists and Seattle’s underground comic book community. Think of it as a “Pop-Up Comic Con.”

Hometown Heroes is Friday, April 8th at 1927 Events just steps away from Zanadu Comics.

Creators Casey Silver and Dimi Macheras (80% Studios, creators of Guttertown Massive) formed the event out of a desire to connect creators, readers and the stories that bond them in a new way. This one night only event aims to provide a stage upon which multiple aspects of local Seattle culture, not just comics, can be represented through the art of these artists. Valiant is taking their comics and creators on the road to meet more than a million fans in the US and Canada throughout 2016. The publisher announced new dates for the Valiant 2016 Convention Tour – a months-long, coast-to-coast celebration. The Valiant tour hits Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon 2016 (ECCC) next week. From Thursday, April 7th through Sunday, April 10th, fans engage with Valiant at the Washington State Convention Center for a weekend packed with programming, special guests, and ECCC exclusives. Valiant will be at Booth #1702 all weekend long.

Fans can get the highest-proofed exclusive of the weekend with the A&A: THE ADVENTURES OF ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #1 ECCC EXCLUSIVE VARIANT – featuring the artwork of fan-favorite artist Ian McGinty and writer Rafer Roberts and artist David Lafuente kick off the first issue of Valiant’s next series here with “IN THE BAG” – an insane rescue mission sending Archer into the depths of Armstrong’s bottomless satchel to free his roguish partner from an ages-old enemy…but only if he can fight his way through a mind-bending maze of history’s greatest lost treasures first!” (Click on the image to see it full size.)
