Did a second young Marvel hero come out this week?
Benjamin Deeds revealed he was gay in Uncanny X-Men #14.
But after sharing this story – Mike Madrid, author of The Supergirls and Divas, Dames and Daredevils pointed out that Miss America Chavez may have come out in Young Avengers #12.
I was so caught up in the cross-dimensional showdown I missed it but when I reread a confrontation between the tough heroine and her opponent she says,
“I’m not on your team, dumbass…however you define THAT!”
Was that a simple matter of fact way of Miss America saying she’s gay?
It’s open to interpretation.
The “kicker of butt” is on a team with two young gay heroes, Wiccan and Hulkling, and Prodigy recently announced he’s bisexual.
I just post a week ago about the future of GLBT characters in the Marvel Now after some recent announcements of titles with this heroes coming to end.
One week later a young X-Man comes out and possibly a Young Avenger is out in issues that are great stories that happened to have these personal revelations. No pre-release hype overload. Just great storytelling with a very matter of fact, “so what?” scene of coming out.
Young Avengers will end in January with issue 15 – or writer Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie will leave the book in what’s called the end of the season.
Here’s hoping Miss America and her fellow teen dreams will live on in a relaunched series with a new creative team. Gillen and McKelvie have set a high bar!
