We Are Robin #3 is one of our top new comics picks of the week but we didn’t know it would end like this.
The young “gang of Robins” met the Batman and readers learned the identity of The Nest.
The teen vigilante heroes defused bombs, dodged trains, contained riots and came face to face with the all-new Batman…it didn’t go as they imagined it would.
But the big head-twister is the final panel.
A mystery man known as “The Nest” has been coordinating the Robins and writer Lee Bermejo revealed the identity.
Let the debate begin.
Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!
If you have not read We Are Robin #3 yet stop reading now.
OK.
Here it comes.
The Nest is Alfred Pennyworth.
It seems a odd choice at first.
Alfred has always been the voice of reason and order in the often chaotic Bat-verse. Alfred advised Bruce Wayne to end his vigilante career, to not take on a teen sidekick. It may seem out of character but it may be right on point with who Alfred has evolved after the events of Endgame.
With Bruce MIA and a growing army of teen vigilantes, Alfred has taken it upon himself to “lead” the Robins. If the teens are going to become crimefighting crusaders then he can hopefully coordinate them, give them focus and help keep them safe as he can.
Does Batman need a Robin?
“Absolutely. I didn’t, and this whole project has completely made me readdress that. The original Robin concept I had was me trying to make sense of this idea that he runs around in a little colorful costume and he’s a teenager. Why is this adult trusting and partnering with this kid? The concept of a teenage sidekick makes no sense to me, so this is just my attempt at a solution to that problem.” Bermejo tells DC Comics.
Does Batman and Robin (s) need Alfred?
Absolutely.
The story continues in We Are Robin is building up to Robin War in December.
