Size Matters.
There’s a growth spurt of size changing heroes in comic book inspired mediums.
Getting small is big time in Marvel movies and DC inspired television.
Ant-Man
Paul Rudd is playing Scott Lang in Marvel’s Ant-Man in 2015. The master thief is recruited by Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to protect his invention – Pym particles allowing a human to shrink to insect size and a helmet that lets him communicate with insects.
It’s not official but it’s a good bet
Rudd and/or Douglas could appear in Captain America: Civil War and The Avengers: The Infinity War I & II.
Nick Spencer will launch a brand new Ant-Man comic book starring Lang in 2015 just in time for the movie. Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso says there’s a long-term plan for Pym. The founding Avenger is known for multiple identities (Ant-Man, Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, Wasp) so it’s likely Pym (or multiple Pyms) could appear in Marvel’s Secret Wars event in 2015.
The Atom
Ray Palmer is the second but most famous man to have this superhero identity in DC Comics. The physicist could shrink to subatomic size after encountering a meteorite. Palmer was a longtime member of the Justice League but in The New 52 reboot, he was only a scientific advisor for S.H.A.D.E.(Super Human Advance Defense Executive) in Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. but he still had his powers.
DC Comics just announced Convergence. The two month event will feature characters from decades of DC continuity so fans might see Palmer and other Atoms (from original Al Pratt to rookie Ryan Choi) make a cosmic comeback. Atomica (Rhonda Pineda) was a villain from Earth 2’s Crime Syndicate recently seen in Forever Evil.
Brandon Routh is playing Ray Palmer on Arrow this season. Right now Palmer has taken over Oliver Queen’s company. No word on if this Palmer will have his super ability on the series but we’ve seen a glimpse of Palmer checking out a super suit. The Flash was a spinoff of Arrow so producers could be planning a potential spinoff for Routh as the shrinking scientist.
Biggest Potential?
Wasp
Janet Van Dyne is one of the most beloved superheroes who shrink. Janet is a founding Avenger, former wife of Pym and one-time Avengers team leader. Janet is currently the center of an epic romance with Havok (of the X-Men) in Uncanny Avengers and AXIS but she’s not on the 2015 Uncanny Avengers team.
In Ant-Man Evangeline Lilly will play Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym. Lilly’s recent hairstyle change inspired fans to think she will assume the power and famous code-name and join the Avengers cast with Rudd.
Did we miss a big hero who shrinks to smaller size (Micromax of Excalibur)enjoyed a brief career) or share your favorite size-shifting superhero in the comments.
