Got to love cosplayers! Sure you have the classic icons like Batman, Superman, Avengers and always lots of Harley Quinns! At Emerald City Comicon in Seattle this weekend I was thrilled to see a first of her kind – at least I’ve never seen a cosplayer honor Agent Abigail Brand of S.W.O.R.D.

Only fitting that the green-haired female Nick Fury of outer space appear at the Emerald City Comicon. Josh Lewis of KOMONEWS.COM captured this pic of Agent Brand with her boyfriend Beast of the X-Men. Brand was created by Joss Whedon during his run of Astonishing X-Men.

“Oh My Stars and Garters!” Indeed!

Enter the Age of Ultron!

The bad guy wins! No plotting and scheming. No long-term planning. Ultron wins! Marvel heroes lose. Fans enjoy!

Enter the Age of Ultron this week from Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch. When this 10 issue series kicks off the classic Avengers enemy has defeated Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Only a handful of survivors are left to stand against the android. Bendis and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort talked about the scope and impact on the entire universe on Marvel.com.

“Age of Ultron is about Ultron, one of our biggest villains ever, finally fulfilling his destiny, which is taking the Earth. From the very first page, Ultron has taken the Marvel Universe and everything is changed. There is a shocking amount of destruction and devastation. It started in Avengers, but it’s meant to be a Marvel Universe book. It starts everyone,” said Bendis, “This was never supposed to be my last Avengers story, it was always meant to be a Marvel Universe event.”

In past events we’ve seen the slow buildup of the enemy. The writer explains that this time – it’s very different: “What would it be like to wake up one morning and have one of the Marvel Universe’s biggest villains have just taken over? How will people react?”

“This isn’t a story where the Skrulls are invading. We cut right to the chase. We’re already past that and Ultron is already here. He’s already put his footprints on the landscape. You’re immediately thrust into the heart of crazy events and things are going a million miles an hour,” adds Brevoort.

The editor and writer confirmed this happens in continuity in the contemporary Marvel NOW! Marvel Universe.

You probably won’t need the back story but the creators say the seeds of this epic go back to the first arc of Mighty Avengers by Brian and Frank Cho, but the most direct prologue is Avengers #12.1, aka a Free Comic Book Day issue.

“Tony Stark knew the next time Ultron came back we wouldn’t be ready. This is that time,” said Bendis.

As soon as you say Ultron you immediately think of Vision, Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne but the new threat from the metal madman will affect every Marvel hero.

“It’s fair to say this is an Avengers Vs. X-Men level event. That doesn’t mean we won’t be doing other things later in 2013, but it’s Brian, Bryan, Brandon, Carlos and all the ingredients needed for a big deal project,” said Brevoort.

“If you go back to the earliest Ultron stuff, he has severe daddy issues, even for a Marvel character, and they all have daddy issues. His logic is that the only thing standing in the way of the Earth being what it can be is humanity. I’m kind of obsessed with artificial intelligence in the real world and why people are scared of it. If there were a Marvel Singularity, it would be from Ultron. This is the moment technology takes over in a hostile way,” said Bendis.

“To write a story like this is incredibly scary, because Ultron coming at us with everything he has is the end of the Marvel Universe. We’re doing it,” said Bendis, “This ending is a whopper. And I’ll go ahead and say it: You can’t guess it. I’m involved in it and even I am going ‘Really?'”

“I could not be more excited for this book to hit the stands. Literally not a day has gone by over the last year where people haven’t asked me when it was coming. I know that people are looking forward to it, so to finally debut it and for it to be, I imagine, much more than people thought it was going to be, is great. It’s beautiful. It takes one of Marvel’s classic villains to a level he’s never been before, takes the heroes to a place they’ve never had to go, and ends in a way you will never guess,” said Bendis.

Age of Ultron#1 arrives this week with 2 more issues this month. For the entire liveblog here’s the link.

Emerald City Comicon saved the biggest and best for the grand finale! Sir Patrick Stewart was welcomed by a packed house to share memories in the final hour of the eleventh annual event. The man who played Captain Picard shared insights into his stellar career including Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Men, Excalibur, Dune, Family Guy and Shakespeare! What a resume! We cheered and laughed and then marveled when Stewart confirmed he will be reprising his role as Professor Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Dirk Benedict made the crowd howl with stories from his time on Battlestar Galactica and The A-Team, Danai Gurira was spotlighted in her second panel of the weekend talking The Walking Dead and her breakthrough role as Michonne. A fan of the katana wielding zombie killer dressed up as Michonne and had two friends as zombies to recreate the iconic entrance of the character to the series.

Boom Studios, DC, Dark Horse, Image and Marvel hosted panels giving previews of upcoming stories and giving fans a chance to ask burning questions. After three days the energy starts to fade but then you see a spirited cosplayer (sometimes an entire family in costume) or get face to face with your favorite creator or star and you’re just as excited as the first moment you entered the show floor!

As we say celebrate the eleventh and biggest Emerald City Comicon yet let’s take a look Continue reading Emerald City Comicon Day Three

Day two of Emerald City Comicon exploded like a super nova with the addition of sci-fi icon Sir Patrick Stewart! A galaxy of stars of science fiction, horror and fantasy await fans on the 6th floor for a chance to have an autograph and celebrity moment. I opted for the Professor Xavier photo from X-Men. My best friend and Navy veteran continued his Star Trek tradition by having the actor who played Captain Picard and Walter Koenig (Chekov from the original series) join the list of Trek stars on his memorabilia from an actual U.S.S. Enterprise her served on in the Navy! Along with the photo ops and autograph sessions fan can pack the panel rooms for a chance to ask questions, cheer and celebrate the fans and shows we love.

DC Comics, Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics and Boom Studios were among the publishers with huge booths with freebies, exclusives for sale and a chance to meet the favorite writers and artists. Marvel Comics brings an army of popular writers, artists and editors to meet eager fans. Panels including the Marvel’s annual tradition: Pint of C.B. (Editor C.B. Cebulski and a team of creators) DC Comics: The New 52 featured a huge roster of favorites. This is the chance for to get sneak peeks at upcoming books and ask burning questions that you may get a definitive answer or a coy tease! ECCC Spotlight Lounge Presents Secret Origins of… are a series of panels starring some of the legendary creators and today’s top talents.

Emerald City Comicon is the chance to own original art from your favorite comic book artist! You can either have everything full blown commission to a quick sketch. Check with each artists or their representation for rates. Many artists are signing books and giving free sketches for your donation to the Hero Initiative. Mike Choi is one of my all time favorite artists. I picked up Rogue and Gambit prints plus a Medusa (of the Inhumans) sketch and in addition to Hero Initiative, Choi is donating to Make-A-Wish.

Sunday’s big event is the Sir Patrick Stewart panel – arrive early for this one! Danai Gurira (Michonne of The Walking Dead) Dirk Benedict (Starbuck of Battlestar Galactica) will be spotlighted with panels plus new sessions with your favorite comic book stars and everything from how to build your own R2-D2 to Star Trek Improv pack the final day!

Now enjoy some of my favorite cosplayers from day two!
