The action, intrigue and humor keep rolling in Peter David’s All-New X-Factor #5 this week. The latest chapter of the corporate team of mutant heroes is a delight for fans of the original New Mutants era as three classic characters are woven into David’s exciting fresh take on X-Factor.

As you can see by the cover Warlock is back. If there’s Warlock then the Magus and Doug Ramsey can’t be far behind.

Polaris, Gambit and Quicksilver are working for Serval Industries. The most recent mission ended in a new member but this is a Danger unlike you’ve seen her or it before. The sentient artificial intelligence is almost childlike after being freed from the Thieves Guild but is as powerful and ruthless in her scan/decide/execute mode. Danger’s robotic frankness provides huge laughs and shocks in the chapter as the team meets their next opponent.

The next big fight is a war with the Magus and two new members. David tells Comic Book Resources why the New Mutants era heroes made the new team:

“As with any of the other characters, it’s because I find them interesting. Cypher has all these problems stemming from visions of his future self, and they wind up having an impact on his modern day characterization. That’s something I’m going to be playing off. And Warlock has his own problems to worry about, especially his involvement with his father, the Magus, which is going to come into play.”

One of my favorite elements of the book is Polaris out from Havok’s shadow and taking command. Davis is also exploring the relationship between Lorna and her half-brother, Pietro. This issue lets readers in on Quicksilver’s hidden agenda and sets the stage for even more stories. down the road that could mean a battle with a Marvel’s super group.

“I think he’s genuinely interested in Lorna’s welfare. He has recently started thinking of her as his sister, and we all know how attached he was to Wanda. With everything that’s happened between Wanda and Pietro, their relationship is no longer like what it was and I think he sees in Polaris someone who may need him and not even realize it. When the irony is that he needs her far more; he needs to be someone’s big brother. It’s just a defining characteristic of him. But he is indeed conflicted because his first loyalties are supposed to be to the Avengers, and yet the more time he spends with X-Factor the more he becomes attached to them. And it’s going to reach a point where he’s going to have some hard decisions to make.”

All-New X-Factor #6 sees two new members join the team with one more in the wings.
