After the box-office success of Thor I’m hoping Marvel will dive into its other mythological heroes and villains for future movies and television shows.
Here are 3 more God-like heroes WORTHY of consideration:
Hercules Marvel’s Herc, Prince of Power was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the pages of Journey Into Mystery. Based on the Greek legend, the demi-God son of Zeus came to Earth and eventually became an Avenger, Defender, Champion and instructor at Avengers Academy. The bold super strong hero romanced She-Hulk. I think there’s great potential in the Incredible Hercules run of Fred Van Lente and Greg Pak in which the Prince was teamed with teen genius Amadeus Cho. The Olympian and sidekick starred in far-flung adventures including the formation of a God Squad to fight off an alien Skrull God during Secret Invasion to a showdown with Hera in Hades.
Ares The Greek God of War was Zeus’s most fearsome killer and recurring enemy of Herc and the Avengers. The limited series by Michael Avon Oeming and Travel Foreman reintroduced Ares. The God of War left Olympus and was living as a human construction worker and raising his boy on Earth away from the manipulations of Zeus but he was drawn into a war between the Greek Gods and invading Gods of the East.
Brian Michael Bendis had Ares recruited by Captain America to join the Mighty Avengers. The son of Ares (Phobos, God of Fear) became a member of Nick Fury’s Secret Warriors. Ares fell under the influence of Norman Osborn and died at the hands of the Sentry in the Siege of Asgard.
Sif Jaime Alexander portrayed the Asgardian warrior in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. Did you know the story about Loki and Sif’s hair? How Loki tried to steal her body? Sif is worthy of her own story- how did she become Asgard’s most formidable female warrior and her journey into the underworld with a confrontation with the Goddess of Death. While Sif longs for Thor’s heart, Balder the Brave is devoted to her. I’d love to see Sif on a mission for the All-Mother taking her into other realms while revealing her rise to fame.
With the success of Thor: The Dark World I see a third solo film starring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder and maybe the opportunity to springboard a Sif, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) or Valkyrie film?
