Kaare Andrews is back at Fan Expo Vancouver. The celebrated artist (Spider-Man: Reign, Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate Comics X-Men) is back in comics after directing films.
Andrews is writing, penciling, inking and creating covers for Iron Fist: The Living Weapon. In a one-on-one with Andrews I asked the creator about what brought him back to comics after directing movies. Just as Danny Rand breaks barriers with kung fu, Andrews is breaking creator roles with the new Marvel project.
“When you’re a kid there’s no difference between toys, animation, movies, comic books – it’s all the same thing. It’s things you love and as you get older the world tries to tell you ‘oh those are different things and you can only do one of them,” and I believed them for a little while. I chose comic books first. And then I found some success I thought why can’t I do the other thing. And I started going back and I wanted make movies and so I started writing and directing shorts.
You know the world tries to box you in and sometimes those boxes are artificial constructs. They’re not real. So if you take that to comic books – the machine has become penciler, inker, colorist, writer – all separate pieces but really…why? There’s no real reason. Those were created to save time and create more product but if you wanted to do all those things you could but what’s happened is a lot of pencilers don’t think they can ink and a lot of inkers don’t think they can color and a lot of writers don’t think they can draw when really…why can’t you do everything. So I’m just bringing it back to like my heroes like Jim Steranko, Frank Miller, John Byrne and Jim Starlin and Will Eisner – all those guys that did everything you know.”
Coming up more of our interview in which we discuss the dark origin of Danny Rand and how it influences Andrews’ approach to the new Iron First book.
Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #1 is at comic book shops now. Andrews competed against legendary Spider-Man artist in a sketch duel today and will be appearing on the final day of Fan Expo Vancouver tomorrow signing and sketching.
