I Dream of DEADPOOL

The first Deadpool trailer is dominating the fanosphere after Ryan Reynolds introduced the first Red-Band trailer on Conan O’Brien.

See the Green-Band and Red-Band versions here.

Here are three things we love and two big burning questions:

Deadpool is rough, rude, raunchy but this rated R anti-hero is is set in Fox’s established X-Men movie universe. Reynolds kills it with an arsenal of weapons and dark humor. Deadpool even gets a power punch from X-Man Colossus while Negasonic Teenage Warhead looks on. Is Colossus the only X-Man appearing?

The Deadpool costume is beautifully based on the source material. It looks like Wade Wilson jumped off the comic book pages.

Self-Aware and we’re not just talking about his ego! Ryan Reynolds delivers some insider cracks and is aware of past mistakes seemingly breaking the fourth wall just like Wade Wilson often does in the comics.

Two big questions…well three actually:

Is that a poor man’s Weapon X? James Howlett/Logan (Hugh Jackman) was transformed from mutant into metal infused killing machine in the covert government program run by William Stryker. In the first Wolverine solo movie, Wade Wilson was also a product of the program – Weapon XI. But in the trailer it looks Wilson’s origin is closer to comics canon. There have been various attempts to recreate the Weapon X program in different bases so this could be a rogue version of the infamous weaponizing program which leads us to…

Will Wolverine make an appearance? Hugh Jackman says he is playing Wolverine one last time in a follow-up to The Wolverine with director James Mangold. Jackman made a hilarious flashback cameo in X-Men: First Class. Could the fan-favorite star be making a cameo in order to fight or exchange raunchy one-liners with Reynolds?

Is Vanessa Copycat? Wade is getting encouragement from girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) who appears to be a sweet, supportive love interest. In the comics Vanessa was a shapeshifter named Copycat who was impersonating Domino of X-Force when we first met her in comics. Is Vanessa more than meets the eye?

Ok…a fourth and bigger question:

What if Morena Barracin is actually Domino? Could the X-Men producers be setting the stage for Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine movie to be X-Force?

Domino and Deadpool were both members of different versions of the covert squad (the first led by Cyclops’s son Cable, the second be Logan) who are a pro-active team to took out the enemies of mutants before they could strike.

What did you love about the new trailer? What questions do you have?

Deadpool arrives February 12, 2016.
