Jeff Lemire packed a ton in his first Extraordinary X-Men arc. In five issues the Children of the Atom faced a new genetic threat, an old adversary and demons of Limbo as Storm assembled a new team, discovered the shocking truth about Cyclops and was guided (or haunted) by a ghost of the past.

Every issue so far left a ton of questions. This week’s thrilling finale of the first arc set the new status quo for the X-Men to the world with unmissable future story possibilities.

The Terrigen Mists are killing mutants. Cyclops attacked the Inhumans and now he’s dead. Storm assembled Magik, Colossus, Iceman, young Jean Grey and Old Man Logan to rescue mutants from the Terrigen threat. The search for Nightcrawler led to Mister Sinister and his new Marauders.

Sinister unveiled a shocker last issue but Lemire was only getting started with the shock and awe. The final fate of Cyke is not what we thought.

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not been reading Extraordinary X-Men (why!?) and especially issue 5 stop reading now.

Seriously.

OK.

Here it comes.

Last issue Sinister revealed he’s trying to save the mutant race with dangerous experiments that are killing mutants in his experiment to make a stronger mutant.

What emerged in the final panel was a twisted Cyclops – the only mutant to survive an infusion of Inhuman DNA. After a lifetime of manipulation, Sinister was still subjecting Scott Summers to his twisted experiments.

It was a twist to Cyke fans who thought the fallen leader may still be alive.

As Storm’s team learned his was a hybrid clone created from Scott’s dead genetic material and Inhuman genes.

Storm, Logan and Jean took on the Cyke clone, the newly reunited Magik and Colossus faced Sinister and Iceman had a heroic moment that could bridge the mutant/Inhuman conflict.

This issue delivered a new moment to make us think Professor Xavier is alive. As Storm and her Extraordinary team stood before the world, we saw what might be Xavier watching proudly then walking away. In earlier issues Storm appeared to be talking to her late mentor then mentally pushed by him in battle.

Is Professor X alive and coming back? He was killed by a Phoenix possessed Cyclops. Was this the Professor’s “ghost” or astral form guiding Storm to this moment and now he’s leaving the Children of the Atom in her hands?

Earlier this week Marvel teased Dead No More. Could this mean the resurrection of Professor X or Cyclops – if he’s really dead?

Next issue the team is off to Weirdworld. Later this year Storm’s team goes into the future in The Apocalypse Wars.

Do you want Professor X to return?
