Even this lifelong X-Fan was scratching my head with this week’s Death of X #3 as a minor character the past is recruited by Cyclops for a big league return and will play a huge role in the upcoming war between the X-Men and Inhumans.
Death of X is revealing the origin of the IvX conflict, the fate of Cyclops and Emma Frost and more of what happened in the eight months following the Secret Wars finale and All-New, All-Different Marvel Now Extraordinary X-Men launch.
The four-part series by Charles Soule, Jeff Lemire and Aaron Kuder already featured the return of several missing in action mutants and the death of a fan-favorite. Along with Cyclops and Emma Frost we have witnessed the return of mutants from multiple eras including Wolfsbane, Warpath, Goldballs and the Stepford Cuckoos.

Marvel shared new art from Death of X while announcing artist Aaron Kuder is now a Marvel exclusive creator.
It’s a huge first project for his Marvel reign: the start of the X-Men/Inhuman war and fate of Cyclops.
Death of X by writers Jeff Lemire (Extraordinary X-Men, Old Man Logan) and Charles Soule (Uncanny Inhumans) and Kuder will reveal what happened to Cyclops and Emma Frost in the eight months after the end of Secret Wars and the launch of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Now.
When the new era began we learned the Terrigen Mists that created new Inhumans was killing and sterilizing mutants. Storm’s team established X-Haven in Limbo as a refuge for mutants they rescued from what became known as M-Pox. We learned Cyclops died in battle with the Inhumans. Jeff Lemire packed a ton in his first Extraordinary X-Men arc. In five issues the Children of the Atom faced a new genetic threat, an old adversary and demons of Limbo as Storm assembled a new team, discovered the shocking truth about Cyclops and was guided (or haunted) by a ghost of the past.
Every issue so far left a ton of questions. This week’s thrilling finale of the first arc set the new status quo for the X-Men to the world with unmissable future story possibilities.
The Terrigen Mists are killing mutants. Cyclops attacked the Inhumans and now he’s dead. Storm assembled Magik, Colossus, Iceman, young Jean Grey and Old Man Logan to rescue mutants from the Terrigen threat. The search for Nightcrawler led to Mister Sinister and his new Marauders.
