The Ninth Doctor (as played by Christopher Eccleston) is back in brand new comic book adventure by Cavan Scott from Titan Comics. Ten years after the Time Lord’s television comeback, The Ninth Doctor along with his fan-favorite companions are together again in a new story: Weapons of Past Destruction.

Scott has written a series of Doctor Who spinoff radio plays, short stories and co-authored Doctor Who: Who-ology. In our interview I asked about the impact of The Ninth Doctor and how his new story fits into the timeline:

Congratulations and how does it feel to bring back the Ninth Doctor as Whovians celebrate 10 years of the new generation of the Time Lord?

“A massive honour! First of all, I can’t believe it’s 10 years since the Ninth Doctor first appeared, and secondly, I’ve always been a big fan of Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor. He really chimed with me from the first transmission of Rose.”

I often call the Ninth Doctor the “James Dean of Time Lords” he burned bright and quick and was gone far too soon- not to mention the cool leather jacket! Why does the Ninth still have such impact after only a season?

“Because he proved that Doctor Who could be great again. Without Christopher Eccleston I don’t think we would have had the last ten years of Who. He made people sit up and take notice and gave us such great characterisation in just 13 episodes. Simply brilliant.”

You’re reuniting the Ninth Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack Harkness – why did this first season trio mean to you and how does your limited series fit in the continuity?

“We didn’t get enough to see enough of them together. They work so well as a unit, with all kinds of interesting dynamics. I’ve always wished we could have seen more of them and now we can!

Continuity-wise, this fits between The Doctor Dances and Boom Town.”

In Seattle we had the pleasure of having Alex Kingston and John Barrowman together at Emerald City Comicon. Kingston was a surprise guest at his packed panel after her daughter was in the audience at asked, “What if River Song meet Jack Harkness?” which makes me wonder – which Ninth Doctor or one of his companions would you like to pair up with from the Tenth, Eleventh or Twelfth era or earlier for an adventure?

“I would love to team the Ninth Doctor with Donna. Just imagine the fireworks, but if I had a chance I’d like the Ninth Doctor to meet Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. Two old soldiers together. It would be interesting to see how Nine relates to the Brig following the Time War.”

Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #2 (Weapons of Past Destruction) arrives today.

The Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors will appear in the Free Comic Book Day offering from Titan Comics this Saturday. Three Doctors in three new stories a sneak peek of the secret Summer 2015 event.
