X-MEN In Love, My Mutant Valentine

Love is a many mutated thing.

The X-Men fight for a world that fears and hates them while navigating romantic twists, turns and temptations on their team.

To commemorate Valentine’s Day here are four of favorite X-couples and there romantic status now.

Scott Summers and Emma Frost

I never imagined Cyclops with anyone else but Jean. When Grant Morrison took over the X-Men he recruited former villain Emma Frost to the Xavier School. A psychic love triangle between two telepaths and Professor X’s boy scout heir apparent, emotional cheating on the astral plane and Jean matchmaking from beyond time and space led to Scott and Emma becoming the new mutant power couple.

Joss Whedon brought Scott and Emma even closer together and reunited Kitty and Colossus during his Astonishing X-Men run. Cyke and Emma held the mutant race together crisis after crisis until the Phoenix Force possessed them and torn them apart. Emma stayed hopelessly devoted to Scott. Cyclops was a victim of the M-Pox disease and now the Inhumans are facing Emma’s wrath as her love has gone mad.

Logan and Storm

After a long friendship with a few moments of flirting Wolverine and Storm shared a passionate kiss on the cover Wolverine and the X-Men #24.

Storm was heartbroken over her marriage to the Black Panther being “annulled” by her own husband. Ororo turned to Logan for a passionate escape and a killer cut. Storm got her groove and mohawk back.

This wasn’t the first time Logan and Ororo shared a kiss. In Uncanny X-Men Annual #11 the two shared a kiss was during a clash with a villain who tempted each X-Man with a vision of life they secretly wanted.

In this issue Wolverine and Storm gave in to passion and inspired her to bring back the Mohawk. The romance was short-lived as Logan lost his mutant power and went on a odyssey that would led to his death. Storm forged on as leader of the X-Men.

Kitty Pryde and Colossus

When Kitty was a teenager at the Xavier School she was crushing on big strapping Russian farm boy with the soul of an artist. Kitty and Colossus were star-crossed sweethearts until Colossus sacrificed himself to find a cure for the Legacy Virus killing mutants including his sister and Kitty’s best friend, Illyana.

Leave it Joss Whedon to finally unite these separated lovers only to rip them apart again. Kitty and the X-Men found Colossus a resurrected prisoner of alien scientists. After years apart and even more years of yearning Kitty and Colossus finally…you know. The “moment” was off-panel but Wolverine gave his approval when Logan saw them and could sense Kitty and Piotor has finally had sex. He only said with a grin “bout time.”

The X-Men save the world from aliens but Kitty was trapped in a bullet in space and Colossus was alone again. Noble Colossus sacrificed himself again becoming demon possessed then he was possessed by the Phoenix Force. Kitty began a literal long-distance relationship with Peter Quill before joining Star-Lord in space as a Guardian of the Galaxy. Colossus had a fling with bad girl Domino.

Kitty and Colossus will be on the same team again (and they’re both single again!) in X-Men: Gold this Spring. Will they get back together?

Northstar and Kyle

Jean-Paul Baubier was a Canadian mutant, Olympic athlete and former Alpha Flight member who made Marvel comics history- twice.

The mutant speedster code-named Northstar came out of the closet in the early ’90’s and later joined the X-Men and became a mentor to young mutants gay and straight.

Northstar fell in love with Kyle Jinadu, a human managing his sports themed company. Jean-Paul and Kyle’s wedding issue was a major comics history milestone that inspired real-life couples.

Relationships are challenging but when one of you is an X-Man and the other a target for an army of enemies, it can take a toll. Jean-Paul and Kyle are still together but not part of the X-books at this time.
