Love is a many mutated thing.

The X-Men fight for a world that fears and hates them while navigating romantic twists, turns and temptations on their team.

To commemorate Valentine’s Day here are four of favorite X-couples and there romantic status now.

Scott Summers and Emma Frost

I never imagined Cyclops with anyone else but Jean. When Grant Morrison took over the X-Men he recruited former villain Emma Frost to the Xavier School. A psychic love triangle between two telepaths and Professor X’s boy scout heir apparent, emotional cheating on the astral plane and Jean matchmaking from beyond time and space led to Scott and Emma becoming the new mutant power couple. Will sparks fly…again?

In the final page of Extraordinary X-Men #1, Storm and her team tracked down a presence that shouldn’t be there. They find Wolverine…just not the one they know and love.

From the cover it appears Old Man Logan will join up with Storm’s team as they try to save mutants from the threat of the Terrigen Cloud.

Will this Logan and Storm have the same sparks as before?

A year before Wolverine died, Logan and Ororo gave in their long burning attraction and became lovers. Now Storm is mourning the loss of her lover, teammate and friend while stepping up as X-Men leader. How will this Logan affect her?

Did this Logan from an alternate future have the same romantic relationship with Ororo? This version of Logan was tricked into killing his fellow X-Men. How will seeing them again affect him?

Will the old spark flare up between Storm and Old Man Logan?

Storm fell for this older man since Logan was technically hundreds of years older than Ororo when they connected romantically but looked younger. Will Old Man Logan and Storm spark again even against the backdrop of a new threat against mutants?

Old Man Logan and young Jean Grey will meet in Extraordinary X-Men #3.

Extraordinary X-Men #2 arrives Wednesday and Old Man Logan #1 is coming later this year – both are by Jeff Lemire.

How does Wolverine and the X-Men go on without the title character?

Logan lost his healing factor and he’s headed for a final battle next month in Death of Wolverine.

Series writer Jason Latour hints at how the book will continue after the demise of the headmaster, mentor, teacher and school co-founder.

“Every moment since the decision was made to kill Wolverine came down, we’ve kind of been dealing these events in one way or another. There’s an elephant in the room we really had to stop and address. Fortunately, I think that’s led to a good new direction for the book in a lot of ways. This second arc is a much slower, quieter kind of story, and in it you’ll see the seeds planted for where this book is going to be headed post-“Wolverine.” Continue reading JASON LATOUR On WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN After Logan’s Death

X-Men books will always be packed with action and fights but it’s the relationships that keep us coming back. Jason Aaron has written a passionate love letter to X-fans of all ages in Wolverine and the X-Men #16 filled with hot hookups, sweet dates and mutant romance.

Storm is adjusting to life as a newly single woman and life back at the school when she turns to Wolverine to work through some issues and ask for favors. The flirtation and fruition of Logan and Ororo is beautifully written and drawn.

Kitty and Bobby finally have a first date after a year of flirting that takes that goes from awkward to unexpected. Teen Jean Grey of the past shares some “bonding time” with a surprise member of the modern age of mutant kids. The final romantic thread of this tale revolves around Idie and Broo with a monstrous cliffhanger.

This issue is a perfect crossroads of previous stories in this book and the first arc of All-New X-Men and sets up Storm’s new status quo in Uncanny X-Force. The beauty and brilliance of Jason Aaron is that you can pick issue this up and enjoy immensely but if you really know your old and current X-Men history it makes it all the more moving.
