X-MEN Director Almost Directed CASINO ROYALE?

Matthew Vaughn gave X-Men: First Class a sense of 1960’s James Bondian intrigue mixed with mutant drama. Vaughn directed Kingsman: The Secret Service, the new espionage film based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

 

Now Vaughn reveals he almost directed the film that relaunched the 007 franchise and turned Daniel Craig in the modern day James Bond.

 

“I had a lot of meetings on Casino Royale,” Vaughn reveals in the new issue of  Empire.

 

“So much so that the head of MGM offered me it. I had a 24-hour period where I thought I was directing Casino Royale.” The whole experience was, he understates, “a bit of a downer”.

 

Vaughn directed Layer Cake, the film that not Craig on the top of the 007 producer’s list. Martin Campbell (Goldeneye) would become the director of Casino Royale.
