An unexpected Four Horsemen of Apocalypse revealed!

We are not talking about the roster in the next X-Men sequel. Jeff Lemire delivered a big twist as Apocalypse Wars began this week in Extraordinary X-Men #8.

In the movie X-Men: Apocalypse Professor X’s team will face Magneto, Psylocke, Storm and Archangel in the movie. Fans will be anxiously awaiting for the big screen sequel to see how En Sabah Nur recruited fan-favorite X-Men to his cause.

In this week’s first salvo of Apocalypse Wars, Storm’s team traveled into the future to save the race but were hit with a shocking betrayal.

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you have not read Extraordinary X-Men #8 stop reading now.

Seriously.

Here it comes.

Storm’s team detects the sudden emergence of 600 new mutant signatures. This discovery seems impossible since the Inhumans’ Terrigen Mist (cause of the M-Pox disease) is killing and sterilizing the mutant race.

Colossus leads a squad of young X-Men (Anole, Glob Herman, No-Girl and Ernst) to investigate and find the 600 are really embryos created by Sugar Man, the twisted scientist from the Age of Apocalypse reality. Sugar Man’s plot is to save the 600 by transporting them into a future away from the now Terrigen-infected Earth with himself as their ruler. The squad stops the scientists’s plot but are sent into the far future.

Storm, Iceman, Old Man Logan, Iceman, Nightcrawler and Jean Grey pursue but something has gone wrong. The senior X-Men arrive much later to find the junior members are older and undergone changes. The final page reveals Colossus is older and leading Apocalypse’s Horsemen: Deadpool, what appears to be an even more mutated version of Venom and a female Moon Knight.

This storyline marks a reunion. In the Generation X series during the Age of Apocalypse epic Colossus and Shadowcat were teachers of this reality’s version of the Generation X team and led a rescue mission to save Magik, who was being held at a slave camp by Sugar Man.

In this issue Magik was ordered by Storm to stay behind the protect X-Haven in Limbo but Illyana has history – granted it’s an alternate history – with Sugar Man and will fight to save her brother after their recent reunion.

This is a possible future but Colossus isn’t the first X-Man to join Apocalypse. Gambit, Sunfire and Archangel have all served En Sabah Nur in the comics.

Apocalypse Wars continues in Extraordinary X-Men #9 then crosses into Uncanny X-Men and All-New X-Men.
