Marvel announced the return of the X-Men’s immortal enemy in Apocalypse Wars. In 2016 En Sabah Nur will strike in Extraordinary X-Men #8, Uncanny X-Men #6 and All-New X-Men #9.
Three months, three chapters starring En Sabah Nur but this is not the crossover you may be expecting. Readers will have go to way back to Fall of the Mutants to see part of the inspiration for this thematic events.
The mutants are facing extinction because of the Inhumans Terrigen Mists. In Extraordinary X-Men #8, Jeff Lemire takes Storm and her squad into the future to save the present and clash with this ancient adversary.
Then in Uncanny X-Men #6, Cullen Bunn, Magneto’s team is torn apart by huge events going way back to Fall of the Mutants and The Dark Angel Saga. Psylocke wants to know why Warren is back to being the Archangel of Death again and can she save his soul?
All-New X-Men #9 by Dennis Hopeless centers on Evan aka Kid Apocalypse. Is he destined to become the evil tyrant or can he change his fate with the help of the original X-Men.
Let’s have a quick X-History lesson:
In Fall of the Mutants, the original X-Men (then known as X-Factor) learned Warren/Angel had becoming Apocalypse’s Archangel of Death. The former X-Men lost his mutant wings and they were replaced with wings of deadly poison blades. (This version of Angel will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse on the big screen in May.)
In The Apocalypse Solution, X-Force decided to kill the reborn Apocalypse before he could rise to power again until they learned he was a child. That didn’t stop Fantomex who shot the child but later helped raise a clone of him called Evan in a bid to see if the boy could change his fate.
In The Dark Angel Saga, Psylocke stabbed Warren freeing him of his Archangel persona but as you can see above the metal wings fly again next year.
Apocalypse Wars begins in March, 2016.
