“X-Men Apocalypse 2016”

These words and number revealed by Bryan Singer on Twitter just set the geek world on fire!

The director is finishing up X-Men: Days of Future Past which unites the cast of the original trilogy and X-Men: First Class in a film based on the classic story by Chris Claremont. Singer was a one man tease machine via Twitter sharing news and pics from the upcoming sequel which arrives in May 2014.

Today’s tweet sure appears that Fox (which controls the X-Men film franchise) is moving ahead with a follow up just two years later starring one of the greatest enemies.

Apocalypse is the oldest mutant. En Sabah Nur’s origins goes back to ancient Egypt and he lives well into the distant future. The shapeshifting mutant believes in the “only the strong survive” and manipulates rival mutants into fighting each other. Apocalypse always has Four Horsemen enforcing his deadly agenda. En Sabah Nur has even corrupted X-Men Angel, Gambit, and Sunfire into becoming his servants.

In Marvel Comics there’s an entire Age of Apocalypse timeline in which the ancient mutant rules a world without Professor Xavier.

Fox has Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) working on a script for a possible X-Force film. The original X-Force leader Cable (son of Cyclops) fought Apocalypse in a future timeline. A more recent version of X-Force with Wolverine as leader fought against the rebirth of Apocalypse.

Will the 2016 film be the Age of Apocalypse or will Apocalypse be the main villain of a new series of X-Men films?
