Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. delivered an action packed new episode introducing new characters, hidden secrets, Easter eggs and one of the most unexpected characters I never thought would jump from comics to screen.

In “One of Us”, Kyle MacLachlan returned as “Cal” the psychotic father of Skye. The scientist is recruiting villains in his crusade of revenge against S.H.I.E.L.D. including Drea de Matteo as the metal clawed Karla Faye Gideon.

Here’s what we learned:

“The Index” is a S.H.I.E.L.D. watch list for super powered people – some are kept hidden in prison.

Skye (aka Daisy aka Quake) is now on The Index. Agent Melinda May recruits her ex-husband (Blair Underwood) as a psychiatrist to treat Skye.

“Cal” bust out one man on The Index – and it’s a shocker!

And if you thought the Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D. plot twist was dramatic wait until you see who may be betraying Coulson.

Before we continue here’s a SPOILER ALERT!

If you didn’t watch this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stop watching now.

Here it comes.

Who did “Cal” bust out of prison?

David Angar who unleashed his power in a dramatic attack to lure Agent Coulson’s team.

Who is this? Ever heard of Angar the Screamer? In the comics Angar was a radical hippie with a superhuman scream that could induce comas, hallucinations and memory loss. Angar was a crazy co-creation of legendary Steve Gerber (Howard the Duck) and Gene Colan in Daredevil in the mid-1970’s.

MacLachlan played Cal with wicked glee and comedic madness and dropped a big hint. In the comics Cal is Calvin Zabo aka Mister Hyde, a scientist whose genetic experiments turned him into a monster. Cal confessed his experiments to his fellow Index refugees.

Before Coulson and May could capture Cal, Gordon the eyeless Inhuman teleported him away. What does this new mystery man want with Cal? In an earlier flashback the eyeless man was under the care of Cal’s ex and Skye’s mother. The mysterious teleporter made one thing clear to Cal: he was just a science experiment gone wrong but gifted like “one of them” referring to the Inhumans.

And did anyone catch the nod to The Incredible Hulk? May’s ex was a professor at Culver State University, where Betty Ross worked when Bruce Banner reunited with her in the Marvel movie reboot.

One more side story came to a big “what the?!” moment last night. Mack and Bobbi declared to Hunter to they are working for “the real S.H.I.E.L.D.” building up to next week’s guest appearance by Edward James Olmos.
