Convergence is taking over the DC Universe literally.
DC Comics announced a nine-week event starting in April 2015 which will replace all their regular ongoing books for two months.
Heroes from multiple Earths have been captured by Brainiac who will unleash them on a mystery planet.
This could be huge news for fans of the old school continuity before The New 52 reboot four years back.
What does this teaser reveal?
The character in the center must be the new villain Telos at the center of the event. Surrounded by Telos are members of the Grant Morrison JLA era in the top left, then the JSA team, the Crime Syndicate and in the final top panel the original Blue Beetle and The Question.
Does this event mark the permanent return of classic icons? Which old school heroes and villain will arrive in The New 52 or will the DC Universe evolve again?
Here are the heroes and villains we hope to see in Convergence:
Donna Troy
The original Wonder Girl was Diana’s younger sister on Paradise Island. Teen Titans team Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane created a new origin for Wonder Girl as a non-Amazon orphan rescued by Diana and raised on Paradise Island. The child would later gain powers and adopt the Donna Troy secret identity and join the Teen Titans. After several romantic and family complications (her child would grow up to become Lord Chaos?) Donna joined the Darkstars intergalactic police force and later became known as Troia. Donna Troy is a perfect candidate for this series about multiple Earths due to her multiple origins and complications. Convergence is a perfect opportunity to give us the classic Wolfman/George Perez Wonder Girl from the Teen Titans.
Blue Beetle
Ted Kord was a genius inventor and the second Blue Beetle. I think of Kord as a less than successful Tony Stark. Ted is a tech genius but does not the financial savvy so he’s always low on funds and in schemes with Booster Gold to make quick money. Kord and Booster were hilarious on the Keith Giffen/JM DeMatteis era Justice League. The humorous crime fighter met a tragic but heroic death at the hands of Maxwell Lord in Countdown to Infinite Crisis when Ted wouldn’t join Lord’s crusade against metahumans. In The New 52 a young Ted Kord meets Lex Luthor in the Forever Evil finale. A traditional version of Lord will appear in the visit to Earth 4 in The Multiversity.
Maxwell Lord is one of my all-time favorite villains. When I first heard rumblings of Ben Affleck joining the Justice League film project I immediately thought of him as this foe. Lord is a charismatic, ruthless businessman who helped found a version of the Justice League as franchises. Lord was really a criminal mastermind slowly, methodically gathering information on the world’s superheroes who he considered a threat to “normal” humans. Lord was actually a metahuman with mind control powers gone mad. In The Omac Project, Kord uses his powers to make Superman nearly kill Batman forcing Wonder Woman to kill Lord to prevent Kal-El from killing Bruce. Lord’s powers have mysteriously changed over the years but the essence of his character is the villain who love to hate. Lord rivals Lex Luthor for corporate ruthlessness and his takeover of Checkmake and DC’s big three heroes was a classic case in master manipulation.
Ralph and Sue Dibny
The “Nick and Nora Charles of Comics” were a sweet married couple who didn’t just rely on his super powers but their smarts and love of solving mysteries. Ralph became the Elongated Man with the power to stretch his body and was in three versions of the Justice League. In the controversial Identity Crisis, Sue was murdered and was revealed to have been raped in the past. One of comics sweetest couples suffered a horrific ending in a gritty, gripping storyline. I’d love to see the Dibny’s get a second chance at happiness in Convergence.
Which classic DC icons do you want to see again in the 2015 event?
