Avengers: Age of Ultron is packed with new and returning favorites but director Joss Whedon says expect even more Marvel icons in Earth’s Mightiest Sequel.
In a Marvel.com interview, the director was asked if there are more characters in the film we haven’t see in the trailers and promos.
He said a simple, “yes.”
Let the speculation begin!
Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, Nick Fury and Maria Hill are back. The new film introduces Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Vision.
The most recent poster revealed Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Anthony Mackie as Falcon and Idris Elba as Heimdall will appear in the film.
Who else will assemble?
Safe Bets:
Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman is playing the heroic royal from Wakanda in a solo movie in 2017 and is said to appear in Captain America: Civil War. Andy Serkis is playing Panther villain Ulysses Klaw and one image a mystery woman in an Age of Ultron trailer made some fans think it was an important member of the Panther’s supporting cast. In comics Wakanda is the only source of vibranium. This is what Captain America’s shield is made of and wouldn’t is make a powerful metal to force new Iron Man armor or….a legion of Ultron units?
Ant-Man. Paul Rudd as Scott Lang headlines the next Marvel solo superhero movie just months after Age of Ultron. It was likely be brief or a full on post credits sequence but I’m betting big on Lang before he was Ant-Man.
Ant-Man. Michael Douglas is Hank Pym. This Pym is not a contemporary of the teammates as in the comics. I think we may see Pym in a flashback with Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) or as someone Tony Stark consults in the Ultron program crisis.
Doctor Strange. The future Sorcerer Supreme of Earth was name dropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Benedict Cumberbatch will portray the surgeon who becomes the Master of the Mystic Arts in a solo film on November 4, 2016. We suspect Scarlet Witch will be an Inhuman instead of a mutant but will he have actual magic powers along with her probability altering power. Wanda and Pietro appear to have gained powers via exposure to Loki’s staff. Could the Asgardian’s powers live in her? The uncontrollable Wanda might need a house call from the Doctor?
Longshots:
Carol Danvers. Before she was Captain Marvel, Carol was a skilled pilot and SHIELD operative. I think we may see a cameo from Officer Danvers before she becomes Captain Marvel in her own film scheduled for 2018.
Spider-Man. The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will appear in the Marvel films thanks to an agreement between Marvel and Sony. Spidey is said to first appear in Captain America: Civil War as heroes are divided but I an picture a cameo of Spidey saving lives as Ultron attacks New York City. Will it be Peter Parker, Miles Morales or both?
Who Am I Kidding But A Geek Can Dream:
Jessica Drew. She was a Hydra agent, S.H.I.E.L.D. deep cover operative and solo hero before becoming a fan-favorite Avenger in comics. While we may not see her as the original Spider-Woman in costume, I would hope to see Drew interact with her mentor/handler Nick Fury. Spider-Woman is starring in a new comic book with a new costume and mission.
Jocasta. We’re not talking Greek tragedy here but it’s the Bride of Ultron. Paul Bettany will play the Vision but we’re not sure if he’s a creation of Ultron (like in the comics) or Tony Stark. Ultron created woman (based on Janet Van Dyne aka Wasp) in the form of Jocasta would become a full fledged Avenger.
The Wild Cards:
Inhumans. Marvel is going all out Inhuman on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Skye was revealed to Daisy Johnson (aka Quake) and she was transformed via Terrigenesis. Even a Kree operative came to Earth to wipe out the “abominations” known as Inhumans. As Marvel marches towards a 2018 movie and with the Inhumans such a critical part of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. we may be one of the classic Royal Family appear in Ultron.
Which of these characters would you want to see in the summer blockbuster?
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1st.
