Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen may not finished as Professor X and Magneto in the X-Men franchise.

While Stewart is not appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse, he says McKellen will be.

“Yes, I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next “X-Men” movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal,” Stewart tells Oregon Live. “…But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.”

The sequel pits the mutants against the first mutant, En Sabah Nur aka Apocalyspe, played by Oscar Isaac. The story is set in the 1980’s and Michael Fassbender will return as Magneto.

McKellen’s role could involve flash forwards or into another alternate history. In comics Apocalypse is armed with alien technology, has invaded the past from the future and even conquered Earth in the Age of Apocalypse, a variant era in which Professor X never existed and Magneto led the mutants.

As Stewart continued there’s hope we’ll see the Professor again in the next Wolverine solo film.

“And what I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie,” Stewart says, ”which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of “X-Men” from the four movies that I’ve already done.”

X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 26, 2016 and Wolverine (no official title yet) is scheduled for March 3, 2017.
