Avengers Versus X-Men #2 Cover Revealed

Avengers Versus X-Men #2 courtesy Marvel.com

Hope is at the center of the battle on the cover Avengers Versus X-Men #2. Marvel revealed the amazing cover by superstar Jim Cheung today.

Iron Man and Magneto are in the foreground. It appears Wolverine (with claws ready to slash) is leaping for Hope (who appears to be in a fiery light, is she hosting the Phoenix?)

This cover fuels the fan fire to many points raised so far:

  – Matt Fraction said Tony Stark was making a new armor with a specific foe in mind. Last week’s AvX teaser images included an Iron Man versus Magneto fight by Adi Granov.

  – Which will Wolverine choose? On AVX #1 Logan appears to be on the Avengers team going into battle against the X-Men. In this image Logan is clearly going in for the kill – aiming for Hope.

  – The Phoenix Force is heading to Earth in search of a human host. Emma Frost has seen the Phoenix image surround Hope before and some call Hope the mutant messiah so she seems to be the likely candidate for the entity.

Marvel included this description along with the image:

“With the opening salvo fired, the time for talking is over and in Avengers Vs. X-Men #2, allegiances are decided upon as quickly as they are broken. What side does Wolverine choose and what decision will Hope make that may turn the tide of the war… just as it begins?”

Comics Newsarama made more interesting points based on the cover.

Uncanny X-Men Writer: Sinister, Cyclops and AvX

Kieron Gillen has resurrected old villains on the new Uncanny X-Men title featuring Cyclops and his Utopia based Extinction Team.

In a new interview by Comic Book Resources featuring fan questions – the British writer tackled classic villains and upcoming events.

Why did Gillen kick off the relaunched title with Mister Sinister?

“I wanted a classic heavyweight X-Men villain and Sinister was simply the only one with the appropriate level of gravitas who wasn’t already elsewhere in play. Magneto is with the team. Apocalypse is busy over in “X-Force.” Sabretooth was already involved in plans you’ll be aware of now (and would be annihilated in a millisecond if he went up against the Extinction team, to be honest). Who else but Sinister? No one, that’s who. So I tried to work how I could do something that was entirely new yet true to what I sawa as the core of the character (mutants as research material, Victoriana, scheming and manipulating, upgrading of self, sinister-ness), and ended up with Sinister is a System — Sinister is a species and someone whose idea of an escape route is to blow off his own head.”

On Cyclops becoming the Magneto of the 21st century?

“I think his current position is that he’s willing to pretend to be more like Magneto to get what he wants — which is no one to fight and kill each other. It’s a specific tactic for a specific situation for a specific timeframe. From Cyclops’ position, it’s a case of keeping mutants alive until Hope does whatever Messiah-y things she’s born to do — if embracing the fact they are feared is a short-term compromise he thinks is the best solution. Cyclops is synthesizing various philosophies. There may be more Magneto in there than previous, but it’s not the dominant strand by any means.”

This is an excellent question: Would Cyclops recruit Daken to replace Wolverine?

“It’s certainly something that could happen — but I don’t think Scott would trust Daken. He’s got a lot of reformed villains on his team, but he’s more convinced by their reasons for being there than the ever-sociopathically manipulative Daken.”

Gillen says Storm and Namor will play big roles in the Avengers Versus X-Men tie-in issues and Magic “comes under hard focus in my AvX issues.”

“Community” Cast as X-Men!

Community X by Aviv Or courtesy BuzzFeed

Now this really is the “All New, All Different X-Men!”

I came across this clever depiction of the cast of the NBC comedy Community as the X-Men on BuzzFeed. Artist Aviv Or illustrated this excellent version of Greendale’s finest students as Marvel’s Merry Mutants! What do you think?

Avengers Versus X-Men #1 Cover Revealed

AvX #1 cover by Jim Cheung courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel revealed the cover to Avengers Versus X-Men #1 by Jim Cheung. This is the first issue of the 12 part event kicking off in April.

Very interesting to note that Wolverine and Beast are seen on the Avengers side. Logan and Scott split the X-Men during Schism but Wolverine is always the wild card. If one of his mutant students or Hope needs his protection due to the return of the Phoenix Force, Logan may switch sides.

Beast felt betrayed by Cyclops and left before Schism. But as the Dark Phoenix saga proved Hank would side with his fellow mutants if they need him.

Jim Cheung’s work is always stunning. Avengers: The Children’s Crusade is one of the most beautifully drawn books Marvel publishes.

Ms. Marvel’s Revenge in Avengers Versus X-Men?

AvX teaser art by Humberto Ramos courtesy Marvel.com

Marvel revealed new teasers for the upcoming Avengers Versus X-Men. Humberto Ramos created this match-up over Paris. Looks like AVX may re-ignite an old rivalry!

Rogue bested Ms. Marvel back in the day under Mystique’s orders. Rogue permanently absorbed Carol’s powers and personality. Wolverine wanted to gut Rogue the first time she wanted to join the X-Men. Professor X eventually helped Carol through her comatose to Binary and back to Ms. Marvel days.

I admit I’m rooting for Rogue and she may have the power advantage but Ms. Marvel may have learned her lesson and is ready and may have secretly been yearning for a rematch.

Ultimate X-Men Kitty, Ultimate Twists

Ultimate Comics X-Men #6 cover by Kaare Andrews courtesy Marvel.com

I confess I might buy a copy of the phone book if Kitty Pryde was in it. Kitty is the main reason I started Ultimate Comics X-Men but Nick Spencer had made me love entire cast and delivered one big huge “WHOAH!” moment at the end of issue #6 out this week.

The Ultimate Kitty Pryde is the hardened, resourceful leader of a small band of mutant survivors. Kitty is known as The Shroud and wears a metal mask and red cloak. Pryde is leading the Ultimate Iceman, Johnny Storm and Jimmy Hudson against Reverend Stryker and a wave of Nimrods.

I thought Stryker, Nimrod Sentinels and Val Cooper had been done to death in the regular universe but Spencer puts new twists and layers to their counterparts. Rogue is the tragic pawn in the struggle to save the remaining mutants and just when you think you understand her actions in this arc…there’s a last panel shocker plus a preview image that will have me back next month.

Paco Medina’s art is dynamic and I love this Kaare Andrews cover that makes me think of Christina Ricci.

X-Men Legacy Changes

X-Men Legacy #260.1 cover by Mark Brooks courtesy Marvel.com

X-Men Legacy #260.1 arrived this week with a new creative team and direction for Rogue, Gambit and Frenzy as they joined the Jean Grey School. This is the first issue since Mike Carey left the book after 5 and a half years of excellence.

I’m excited to see where I think new writer Christos Gage will take us. Rogue has evolved into a confident mentor of young mutants and she quickly makes one junior X-Man reach a new level of power and potential during a football game.

There’s a new threat to rebuilt school from an ancient enemy that’s right out of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer’s Sunnydale. I actually forgot that the Xavier estate has some nightmarish neighbors down below. Gage writes a dynamic fight with the invaders that shows off Rogue’s mastery of her power and the potential in the new kids.

What’s really exciting is the slow burn then passionate ignition of a new love triangle among these X-Men and the return of Exodus. Given the villain’s history with the reforming Frenzy that should create a different kind of spark.

I absolutely loved David Baldeon’s art which reminded me of Gary Frank on The Incredible Hulk. The first issue is a winner and I’m excited to see how the legacy evolves.

X-Men Revenge Cross-Over Idea 2

Uncanny X-Men #123 featuring Arcade courtesy Marvel.com

My obsessions are colliding again after the latest episode of Revenge. I always love seeing Roger Bart on screen. I was fortunate to see him on stage in a pre-Broadway version of Young Frankenstein the Musical in Seattle. Last night Bart guest starred on my favorite new television guilty pleasure as a bow tie wearing author.

Every time I saw him I kept thinking this guy could play Arcade, the X-Men villain. The assassin-for-hire traps his targets in his Murderworlds – an amusement park style complex filled with high-tech deathtraps. Bart looks the part with the bow tie but has an extensive resume of characters that go frightfully unhinged right before our eyes.

One theory of Arcade’s background is that he was a spoiled rich kid who killed his own father upon learning he was about to be disinherited. Arcade finally found something he was good at and used his fortune to build his Murderworlds. For the complete Arcade bio visit this Marvel link.

And I still hold on to my earlier post that Emma Frost should visit the Hamptons to cross paths with the man who could be her twin – Nolan Ross.
