Comic Book Round Table Reunites!

Zanadu Comics Seattle First Round Table Group 1/11/12

The first gathering was a such a success it’s now called “Discussions from the Long Table” at Zanadu Comics in Seattle. Bring topics and comic picks you’d like to share.    The group will discuss Prophet #21 (I need a little therapy myself after that trippy read) as our book of the month but you don’t need to have read it.

New faces are welcome. I had a blast last time bonding with a diversity of fellow comic fans and discovered new titles I’m glad I picked up.

“The Wolverine” Movie Release Date!

Summer 2013 just got a little wilder and hairier! Fox announced July 23, 2013 as the release date for The Wolverine according to The Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision. This will be Logan’s second solo movie starring Hugh Jackman and directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line).

This story is set in Japan and is said to based on the first Wolverine miniseries by the legendary team of Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

This story introduced two of Logan’s most iconic leading ladies: Lady Mariko, daughter of a crime lord and Yukio, wild Ronin.  Wolverine is caught between the ninjas of the Hand, Clan Yoshida and their mutant enforcer, Silver Samurai!

Nick Fury The Movie?

“And you will KNOW my name is Nick Fury when I lay my vengeance on thee!”

It’s a good bit and I stand by it – back to the story – one of my friends and followers emailed this IMDB link followed by “WHATTTTTTT!”

Marvel has a full slate of movies post Avengers including Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 plus two untitled films – Captain America 2 is likely but is Nick Fury getting his own flick?

Thor and Nick Fury from Ultimates #7 courtesy Marvel.com

  The synopsis goes like this:

“A daring amateur boxer from Hells Kitchen is recruited by the Army for some top-secret assignments. He soon is promoted to captain, where he puts together the First Attack Squad, a group of elite soldiers who carry out elite missions.”

Samuel L. Jackson, Neal McDonough(Dum Dum Dugan) and Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) are listed as rumored.

How cool would a young Nick Fury and the formation of SHIELD movie be? Who could play a young Nick? And could you have feature one of his World War II missions with a Canadian paratrooper – last name Howlett (soon to be named WOLVERINE!)

Amazing Spider-Man Trailer 2!

The Geek world is still reeling from the Avengers Super Bowl spot but Spidey is swinging into action, family drama and some great one liners in the new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man!

Here’s the Marvel link if you’d like the read the entire press release.

Young love blossoming. Spidey fighting the Lizard. Parker family secrets.

What do you think of the darker, younger Spidey flick? Tony Stark has the best line in the Avengers trailer but I really loved Denis Leary’s in this one!

Teen Titans SUPERSIZED!

Teen Titans Annual #1 courtesy DC Comics The Source

I’m a big fan of the new Teens Titans series. The young heroes are trying to expose the mysterious organization hunting metahuman teens and just got whipped by Superboy.  The Titans are about to receive the super size treatment courtesy of Teen Titans Annual #1 – the first giant size annual from DC Comics- The New 52.

The big story launches in May with Teen Titans and soars through Superboy and Legion Lost. Scott Lobdell and Tom DeFalco are the minds behind pitting the heroes against each other with art by Titans illustrator Brett Booth.

“You know how comics used to have cover copy that read ‘This issue has it all!’… then you’d read the issue and, well, it had some but not all? Well this Annual really does have it all!” Lobdell tells The Source. “We finally get to see the oft-mentioned Colony – where the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. leader named Harvest has been keeping the hundred or so teenagers (did I say hundred?!) for who-knows-how-long. We get to see the Teen Titans in pitched battle against the Legion Lost (You can understand why Red Robin is skeptical about a team of teenagers claiming to come from the 30th Century, and why Tyroc is scratching his head over the existence of a team that – according to the history progs – is still some eight years away from being formed!). Then there’s the introduction of half the roster of the new RAVAGERS series! It has been eight issues since Red Robin threw down the gauntlet to Harvest, and now we’re going to see if the Teen Titans have what it takes to shut down N.O.W.H.E.R.E. once and for all! Yes, there’s a reason why this story could only take place in an annual – because there is just too much story to be contained in one of the monthly books!”

This Brett Booth cover looks cool – Bunker v. is that Timber Wolf?

The crossover begins with TEEN TITANS ANNUAL #1 then weaves through SUPERBOY #9, LEGION LOST #9, TEEN TITANS #9 and THE RAVAGERS #1.

Blade Runner, Harrison Ford Follow Up

Alcon Entertainment denies reports of Harrison Ford joining their new Blade Runner film. Sites were buzzing with the rumor that Ford was in early talks to reprise his role as replicant ‘retirement’ specialist Rick Deckard for director Ridley Scott.

“It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner. To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment,” said Andrew Kosove.

Asked if Ford could re-appear, Kosove says “In advance of knowing what we’re going to do, I supposed you could say yes, he could. But I think it is quite unlikely.” He goes on to say “What Ridley does in Prometheus is a good template for what we’re trying to do. He created something that has some association to the original Alien, but lives on its own as a standalone movie.”

Thanks to Deadline for the update.

A friend asked me what kind of new Blade Runner film I wanted to see. It would be fascinating to see the development of the Tyrell Corporation, the replicants and formation of the Blade Runner units.
