The X-Men movie universe is mutating.

X-Men: Apocalypse may be the final film for the First Class cast. Deadpool broke the rules and broke box-office records. A Gambit standalone is still in the cards. Producer Simon Kinberg gave an update on a New Mutants spinoff film.

Don’t call them X-Babies. The New Mutants could be the next evolution of Fox’s X-Men film franchise.

In the comics the New Mutants were a new generation of teens training (Karma, Mirage, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Sunspot) at the Xavier School that Professor Xavier recruited when he thought his team had died in action.

Magik (the younger sister of Colossus), Magma, Cypher, Boom Boom, Skids, Rusty Collins and an alien named Warlock later joined the kids. A younger Kitty Pryde called the students X-Babies. Magneto even became the school’s headmaster and a must sterner teacher. The New Mutants evolved into X-Force led by Cable.

Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is writing the script. Kinberg was asked about the status and tone of the spinoff:

“Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool on because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men, New Mutatants…It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique voice, original voice to it.” Kinberg told IGN.

“That’s more fun for me, working in the X-Men Universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA (Young Adult) vibe to it.”

Kinberg wouldn’t which characters could be in the movie.

Sunspot and Warpath appeared as future X-Men in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The New Mutants’ frequent enemies were the Hellions, students of Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club before she joined the X-Men. Warpath started out as a Hellion before joining X-Force.

In X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer will introduce new actors playing younger versions of Scott Summers, Storm, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler so some of those actors/characters could appear.
