Superheroes will rule 2018. The Marvel Cinematic Universe reaches a major milestone and new beginning. The X-Men franchise mutates with New Mutants – literally – jumping to the big screen. A DC comics legend will make a big splash in cinemas – and it won’t be a storyline punchline.
The X-Men film franchise is mutating into something scary!
Fox revealed the first trailer for THE NEW MUTANTS. Based on the X-Men comic book but with the vibe of a teen horror film.
Take a look and let’s break down who’s who, what we know and what could be:
The mutants are not in the Xavier estate but a psychiatric facility under the care of a Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga). The patients include characters from the comics each experiencing nightmarish visions and encounters.
Why a X-Men horror movie? When go back to the comic book origins and most memorable New Mutants stories you can see the inspiration.
Generation X #1 is the latest ResurrXion teaser from Marvel via Twitter with the tease of a new series coming in 2017 in the aftermath of Inhumans vs. X-Men.
The image shows various members of “younger generation” teams including Generation X, New Mutants, Generation Hope, New Mutants, New X-Men: Academy X and Wolverine and the X-Men when Logan established the Jean Grey School.
The first Generation X (seen here, co-created by Scott Lobdell and Chris Bachalo) evolved out of the Phalanx Covenant when Emma Frost and the late Banshee established a mutant school where Jubilee transferred and introduced future X-Men incluidng M (Monet St. Croix) Husk, and Chamber got a higher education in mutant 101.
The X-Men movie franchise is jumping into a new decade – one that was a blockbuster era for the comic book.
The current trilogy is leaping through the decades. First Class was set in the 1960’s in the heart of the Cold War. Days of Future Past was set in the 1970’s during the Nixon era and reset the timeline. X-Men:Apocalypse rises in 1983 in this summer’s sequel.
Producer Simon Kinberg confirmed the next film will time jump again:
“The next one is set in the ’90’s” said Kinberg according to ComingSoon.
Fans are counting down to X-Men: Apocalypse while speculating on which “new” New Mutants will appear in the next X-Men spinoff film.
Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is writing and directing the upcoming New Mutants film. He’s been sharing images of classic comic book art featuring members of the team via Instagram.
The posts show the original lineup: Mirage, Sunspot, Cannonball, Wolfsbane and later additions Magik and Warlock.
X-Men: Apocalypse may be the final film for the First Class cast. Deadpool broke the rules and broke box-office records. A Gambit standalone is still in the cards. Producer Simon Kinberg gave an update on a New Mutants spinoff film.
Don’t call them X-Babies. The New Mutants could be the next evolution of Fox’s X-Men film franchise.
In the comics the New Mutants were a new generation of teens training (Karma, Mirage, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Sunspot) at the Xavier School that Professor Xavier recruited when he thought his team had died in action.
Magik (the younger sister of Colossus), Magma, Cypher, Boom Boom, Skids, Rusty Collins and an alien named Warlock later joined the kids. A younger Kitty Pryde called the students X-Babies. Magneto even became the school’s headmaster and a must sterner teacher. The New Mutants evolved into X-Force led by Cable.
Writer/director Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) says the first script for X-Men spinoff New Mutants is complete.
Boone shared the update via Twitter including X-Men producer Simon Kinberg and co-writer Knate Gwaltney.
The New Mutants were a younger generation of Xavier students including the little sister of Colossus who would become known as Magik.
In comics New Mutants evolved into X-Force, a pro-active squad taking the fight to enemies of mutants. But the original New Mutants have often reunited. Magik is now on the main X-team while Sunspot and Cannonball are Avengers. Continue reading NEW MUTANTS Movie Update
