Fans are counting down to X-Men: Apocalypse while speculating on which “new” New Mutants will appear in the next X-Men spinoff film.

Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is writing and directing the upcoming New Mutants film. He’s been sharing images of classic comic book art featuring members of the team via Instagram.

The posts show the original lineup: Mirage, Sunspot, Cannonball, Wolfsbane and later additions Magik and Warlock.

Who are they and what can they do?

Mirage/Dani Moonstar projects illusions.

Sunspot/Roberto Da Costa appeared in an alternate future in X-Men: Days of Future Past and converts solar energy into super strength.

Cannonball/Sam Guthrie could fly with a force field surrounding him as he blasts.

Wolfsbane/Rhane Sinclair could transform into a werewolf  and into a actual wolf.

Magik/Illyana Rasputin is the younger sister of Cyclops and could summon teleporting discs. Illyana was kidnapped, raised in an alternate dimension by demons where she became a powerful sorceress and ruled the demonic realm Limbo.

Warlock was actually an alien refugee from a race of techno-organic beings.

There’s no official word on a release date for New Mutants or which characters will make the cut but this sure fires up speculation Boone will focus on the early New Mutants run by legendary creative team Chris Claremont, artists Bob McLeod and Bill Sienkiewicz from the early 1980’s.

The New Mutants’ main rivals were the Hellions, students of Emma Frost of the Hellfire Club.

In the comics after 100 issues New Mutants evolved into X-Force, another possible spinoff movie.
