Fox is evolving its X-Men franchise.
Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) has signed on to direct a film based on New Mutants, a standalone spinoff according to Deadline. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg and Laura Shuler-Donner will produce.
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” Kinberg told Deadline.
When Professor Xavier believed his X-Men were dead, he recruited a new generation of students that continued the franchise’s commitment to diversity.
The original New Mutants created by Chris Claremont included Native American Dani Moonstar/Mirage with illusion powers, X’ian Coy Mahn/Karma with mind possession powers, Brazilian Roberto Da Costa/Sunspot with solar energy absorbing powers, Scottish Rhane Sinclair/Wolfsbane who could transform in a wolf and Kentucky country boy Samuel Guthrie/Cannonball who could fly with a near invulnerable blasting field.
Future New Mutants would include Illyana/Magik, the younger sister of Colossus, Magma, Doug Ramsey/Cypher and an alien named Warlock.
Sunspot was seen in the future sequences of Days of Future Past.
No word on a release date or how it could connect to X-Men: Apocalypse which arrives in 2016.
