Jackman’s final film appearance as Wolverine is a family affair. After a poster confirmed the film’s title and release date, speculation swirled over the identity of the child holding the X-Man’s hand in the poster.

There’s no official word fans suspect the girl is Laura/X-23 – the cloned “daughter” of Wolverine who first appeared in the X-Men: Evolution animated series before becoming a popular character in comics. Logan became Laura’s father figure and she eventually joined the X-Men. Laura is currently carrying the Wolverine code-name and headlining her own book following the original Wolverine’s death.

Old Man Logan is a story by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven where Logan is the last X-Man living in desert badlands. The super villains of the world united and killed most of the heroes. Logan was mentally tricked into killing his fellow X-Men so he’s sworn to never unleash his claws again. Logan found a new life as a husband and father in the isolated desert until a tragic encounter caused him to go on one last mission against the villains who conquered the world.

Boyd Holbrook is playing the villain Donald Pierce after the film’s Instagram account displayed a photo of the actor with a caption that reads, Pierce. In the film Pierce is head of security for a company called Transigen In the comics Pierce is a cyborg and the only non-mutant in the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, a cabal of rich mutants with plots that pitted them against the X-Men. Pierce later founded the Reavers after recruited other cyborgs, many of them survivors of previous fights with Wolverine.

In the X-Men: Apocalypse post-credits scene a strike force of soldiers and scientists raided the Weapon X labs (where Logan was transformed into Wolverine) and his blood samples were seized and put into files marked Essex Corporation.

In comics Nathaniel Essex is a scientist known as Mister Sinister, a twisted genetics expert obsessed with mutants who tormented the X-Men.
There’s still no official word that Mister Sinister will be appearing but Stephen Merchant is reprising his X-Men Apocalypse role of Caliban. In the last film Caliban operated a mutant underground that transported refugee mutants to safety for a price. In the comics Caliban was a meek, sickly mutant with the ability to track other mutants. He belonged to the Morlocks, a tribe of mutants living in tunnels under Manhattan.

Richard E. Grant will appear in the film as Dr. Zander Rice according to The Wrap. Rice is a scientist who worked on a later version of the Weapon X project that led to X-23’s creation.

James Mangold is returning to direct the film. He also directed Walk the Line, the Johnny Cash biographic film. Cash is singing Hurt, a song by Nine Inch Nails, in the trailer
