The Inhumans are one of my all-time favorite teams in comics and their leader, Black Bolt, is one of the most fascinating characters in comics. I was thrilled to learn the Inhumans will rise up to play a major role in the fight against Thanos during the Infinity event.

I’m excited to share the news from Marvel about Inhumanity! One of my favorite writers, plus one of the most dynamic artists will chronicle the next evolution of the Inhumans in a brand new series.

Matt Fraction (Fantastic Four, FF, Hawkeye) and Joe Madureira will launch Inhumans in 2014. Black Bolt, Medusa and the rest of the Kree creations have appeared in Fantastic Four and the Avengers with the occasional limited series.

Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso explains why these group will become a focus for Marvel in 2014 on Marvel.com.

“The Inhumans have been the subject of heated discussions for years around these halls. They are truly unique. Spider-Man, Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Captain America—they were birthed by science. The X-Men—they are the next stage in genetic evolution. But the Inhumans—there is an existential crisis at the heart of their origin. They were born in an aborted genetic experiment by the alien race known as the Kree. They were born to be a weapon.”

“It’s a chance to reclaim a key metaphor to me, of alienation and disenfranchisement. We’ve given ourselves the chance to tell stories about a group of people that fit in yesterday but today are misfits, freaks, and outcasts.
And these characters endure because there’s something amazing about a secret royal family that begs for big mythic stories,” adds Matt Fraction.

The fan-favorite writer of X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Fantastic Four explains why the elusive clan appealed to him.

“The idea that there’s a secret super hero city, and I might belong there, was a hook that fascinated me. The possible stories you can set against that backdrop feels very rich to me,” Fraction tells Marvel.com, “I’ve never worked on a series like this in the past; that’s sort of how I make my career choices anyway, not wanting to repeat myself. INHUMAN means I’m telling small, human, intimate origin stories about new Inhuman characters, set against the grander story of the politics of a fragmented royal family battling one another for dominance. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever done.”

The Inhumans were created by the Kree Empire. Black Bolt is the king with the power to level mountains with his voice. Black Bolt has served in both versions of the Illuminati and is currently appearing in New Avengers. Medusa (with her powerful hair) is his devoted Queen and current member of FF. Crystal was the girlfriend of Johnny Storm, wife of Quicksilver, mother of Magneto’s granddaughter, a former Avenger and married to Ronan the Accuser in a political marriage. Gorgon, Karnak, Triton and Lockjaw the Time Dog round out the rest of the royal family.

The Inhumans are definitely one of Marvel’s most fascinating characters and I’m excited to see how Fraction writes them. The book to watch in 2014!
