Deathstroke strikes again with a brand new number one by Tony Daniel (Superman/Wonder Woman, Batman, Detective Comics) this week.
The most infamous mercenary in DC Comics is getting his second shot at a solo book since The New 52 Reboot and co-starring in New Suicide Squad.
It’s a comic book comeback for a popular villain who’s won new fans over in Injustice: Gods Among Us and Batman: Arkham Origins video games and Manu Bennett’s portrayal of Slade Wilson on Arrow.
“I’ve always been a big Deathstroke fan, dating back to my teenage years and he’s only gotten more bad-ass with time. He’s an incredible character, whether you’re playing him in a video game or watching him on TV or reading him in a comic book. People love Deathstroke now more than ever due to all the avenues he’s available in, myself included,” Daniel told MTV.
“I tell people he’s sort of like a tricked out Batman, but he’ll kill you. Of course he’s not anything like Bruce Wayne, but he is a man with money and the means to pay for the gadgets and weaponry he’ll need to accomplish any goal. I’ve always been drawn to characters with a dark side and I think that makes him complex and compelling.”
Like Batman and Detective Comics before, Daniel is writing and drawing the new Deathstroke.
“It allows me a lot of freedom actually. As I’m writing, I’m thinking visually and I can come up with great big, imaginative backdrops and settings for the adventure. And it allows me to really plan for how I want the book to look and feel. I am envisioning the overall tone as I am writing. I’m really allowed to put all of my imagination onto the page. I am still working with an inker and a colorist but working with a great colorist like Tomeu Morey, who is phenomenal, and a great inker like Sandu Florea, really sets the tone, as well. For me to get to write the characters too is a huge bonus for me,” Daniel told Comic Book Resources.
“There is so many things that I want to do with the character and so many directions that I want to go. I want people to feel invested in the character and invested in his missions. They are not going to just be missions for hire or flavor of the week bad guys that he’s going to fight. The missions that he is going to undertake are going to be a little more personal to him and I hope that translates into people wanting to follow his story.”
Deathstroke #1 hits Wednesday. This marks the third DC villain to take the lead after Forever Evil. Lex Luthor is leading Justice League and Sinestro is starring in his own solo book.
