Captain Marvel crushing Iron Man’s helmet?
Marvel shared the cover and new details from Captain Marvel #6 as a huge superhero showdown spills in Carol’s solo book.
Civil War II writer Brian Michael Bendis teased the cover by Kris Anka at Emerald City Comicon a couple of weeks ago. I got “busted” and called out by the panel (in a teasing way) for cheering for it.
Christos Gage and Ruth Fletcher Gage take over Captain Marvel as Carol becomes a major player in the conflict.
Carol is evolving from soldier/pilot to leader. In her new series, Carol leads S.W.O.R.D. and a satellite of scientists and soldiers tasked with protecting Earth from alien threats.
The war erupts when a new Inhuman with the ability to see the future emerges. Carol and Tony Stark lead opposing sides over how to use to not use the power. The Gages explain why Carol emerges as Stark’s rival.
“For Carol, it would be a dereliction of duty to have this incredible resource [the Inhuman Ulysses] and not use it to save lives,” Ruth Gage told Marvel.com. “How could you avoid the chance to prevent a bombing, or to save hundreds from an earthquake?”
“She can’t,” added Christos Gage. “It’s her job as a soldier and an Avenger to intervene in these things. And anyone trying to stop her is threatening the very lives she’s trying to save.”
As Bendis said at ECCC, the public will be aware of this war of heroes. Captain Marvel’s stand and he defends it will be for all of people on the planet to witness.
“Carol will become a focal point of this conflict and controversy, and she’ll be very much in the spotlight. How she’s viewed and how she handles it are at the core of the story.”
