Before The New 52, Jean Paul Valley was a Gotham City student who became a member of the Order of St. Dumas. The brainwashed assassin for this religious organization became a member of the Batman cast and eventually became Batman when Bruce was crippled by Bane in Knightfall. Only the Michael Lane version of Azrael appeared briefly in the new continuity.
