ALL-NEW INVADERS #1 Review

Writer James Robinson takes Marvel’s oldest superhero team (at least chronologically) and make them exciting, fresh and fun in All-New Invaders #1.

Captain America, Bucky, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the original Human Torch fought Nazis and Hitler’s super soldiers in World War II. The heroes have dramatically changed except for Steve Rogers. The enemy is more powerful than the Third Reich but like Hitler – the Kree are looking for lost mythological treasures on Earth.

This first issue focuses on Jim Hammond. The first artificial human is now living a simple life in a small town while coping with a momentous act that saved humanity. Jim can hardly enjoy an Agent Cooper (from Twin Peaks before it got freaky) moment at a local diner when a massive Kree warrior kills Jim’s innocent neighbors and triggers a World War II memory in Jim involving the Nazis and Hela, Norse Goddess of the Underworld.

It’s flame on as Jim lights up as the Human Torch but it’s old allies to the rescue while another classic Invader may have already betrayed the human race. James Robinson and artist Steve Pugh take a classic concept but launch the heroes into a bold direction. The book felt fun and nostalgic yet fresh. With great characters and a cosmic twist on the missions that brought them together All-New Invaders is a book to watch.
