RIP Yvonne Craig.
The actress is best known for playing Barbara Gordon/Batgirl on the 1960’s Batman television series has died. Yvonne Craig died at 78 after a fight with breast cancer according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Craig join the show on it’s third and final season but the image of the smart costumed crimefighter will never be forgotten.
There’s was a heightened sense of excitement when you saw Batgirl zoom across the credits on her motorcycle. This Batgirl cover was an homage of Purple Rain but it took me right back to watching Batman returns after school.
On the beloved series only Alfred (Alan Napier) knew librarian Barbara Gordon was secretly Batgirl.
Craig will live in geek hearts and minds for another iconic role: Marta the green-skinned Orion slave girl who tried to kill Captain Kirk on Star Trek, the Who Gods Destroy episode.
For many geeks Yvonne Craig as Batgirl was our first female superhero. Craig played Barbara as smart, strong, determined and kick-butt crimefighter by night and librarian by day. The impact of Craig’s Batgirl lives on in the writers, artists and readers hearts and minds.
