The Juggernaut!
One of the mutants oldest enemies comes stomping back in Amazing X-Men #15 this week.
It’s part of why writer Chris Yost brought the Russian X-Man of steel back into the fold in part.
Colossus and Jugernaut were both avatars of the demon Cyttorak.
The infamous gem of Cyttorak is back to Earth and the race is on in The Once and Future Juggernaut a four-part story that could crown the next avatar.
For years Professor X’s step-brother (Cain Marko) possessed the power and became a super villain often teaming with mutant criminal Black Tom Cassidy.
During the Fear Itself event Marko was transformed by the power of the Asgardian God of Fear. In order to stop a rampaging Juggernaut. Colossus made a deal with a demon to become the new Juggernaut to stop Marko’s warpath. Piotr Rasputin’s sacrifice cost him his relationship with Kitty Pryde. Later Colossus was one of five mutants possessed by the Phoenix Force in Avengers vs. X-Men. Magik finally cast the Juggernaut powers of her brother.
Cyttorak is back.
“The X-Men can’t trust anyone with the gem, and it really brings to a head some of the personal issues that have been lying dormant with Colossus’ return, and for Cain since the death of his step-brother Charles Xavier,” Yost told Marvel.com. “Trust, responsibility—Storm’s of a mind to take no chances these days. She grounds Peter and will do anything to stop Cain from getting the Gem. But there are other people in play that are going after it as well.”
Cain and Colossus will feel the sway of the mystical gem again.
“For both Cain and Colossus, it’s potentially life-changing,” Yost told Marvel.com. “That gem gave each of them unimaginable power, but truth be told, it brought along with it nothing but trouble. So, is that power worth it?”
“Cain is in a very different place now that he’s lost the power,” Yost says. “For the first time in a long time, he’s out of the game. Super villains, gods, never-ending fighting—it’s all behind him. So when the opportunity to reclaim it arises, Cain’s motives are unknown.
“Meanwhile, Colossus is trying to get his life back together after his brush with the power of the Juggernaut as well as the Phoenix Force. Some think that he’s going to want that power back. They’re not quite sure they can trust him with it either; last time he had power, it didn’t go so well for the planet.”
Who will become the next avatar of Cyttorak?
Will Colossus, Cain Marko or someone else wear the helmet and become the Unstoppable Juggernaut?
“A few of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe get the call,” Yost hints. “But Cyttorak needs a specific kind of person… someone they can manipulate. Someone who craves the power.”
The story begins in Amazing X-Men #15 out Wednesday.
