In The Trial of Jean Grey the Shi’ar have kidnapped Jean to stand trial for her crimes as the Phoenix. This is the original Jean from the past who never became the host for the malevolent entity who wiped out a Shi’ar battle cruiser, consumed a planet causing a supernova that killed billions of lives.

Brian Michael Bendis is weaving this incredible crossover in the pages of All-New X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy. As Jean stands trial – Kitty, Scott, Hank, Bobby and X-23 joined forces with Peter Quill’s freedom fighters to find and save Jean. They found something shocking in deep space.

Christopher Summers (Scott’s father) is alive and leading the Starjammers again. In this week’s chapter – tt’s a touching reunion for Corsair and his son. You have to remember this is the original Cyclops who thought his dad died in a plane crash when he and Alex were boys. This Scott does not know he has a third brother, Gabriel (aka Vulcan) who would kill their father.

Marvel announced young Scott and Corsair will star in a new ongoing Cyclops series written by Greg Rucka. In the current crossover or upcoming series we’ll likely learn how Corsair is alive again. I hope we see the resurrection of Gabriel Summers, too.

Vulcan was created by Ed Brubaker in X-Men: Deadly Genesis – one of the most exciting and tragic chapters in X-history. For years there had been hints of a Third Summers brother and he was finally revealed in this modern classic that would shatter the mutant family and ripple across the universe.

Young Scott and Alex thought their parents died after pushing them out of the family’s crashing plane with the only parachute. Scott and Alex would eventually reunite and become Professor Xavier’s star students. Christopher and his wife were Katherine were captured by D’Ken, the mad leader of the Shi’ar. Katherine died but her unborn child was saved and sent to Earth as a slave for a Shi’ar spy. Christopher never knew about his son.

Gabriel  (who took the name of the Roman god Vulcan) was eventually freed and found his way to become part of Professor X’s “secret” X-Men that died on Krakoa trying to save the original X-Men. The Professor knew Gabriel was Cyclops’s brother but kept that hidden along with the tragic fate of the inexperienced team.

Gabriel survived and upon reawakening unleashed a sadistic campaign of revenge against Professor X and the team including the murder of Banshee. Vulcan’s thirst for vengeance took him into space where he killed his father, the Shi’ar Emperor and sparked a civil war in which he became leader of the Shi’ar Empire. Gabriel was last seen being pulled into a hole in space and time after war with the Inhumans and Kree.

Vulcan was powerful new member of the X-Men’s rogues gallery. Gabriel was like Magneto in many ways. A series of tragic circumstances turned a promising child into a revenge-driven monster. Having the original X-Men brought to the here and now is fueling incredible stories. Brian Michael Bendis’s idea was genius. As a longtime reader it’s moving and exciting to see Scott start over in a way. I’d like to see Gabriel get that chance. I hope Vulcan returns in All-New X-Men, Guardians or the new Cyclops series. Seeing Corsair get to start over with both sons would make for great stories among the stars.
