Why is Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? A new post-credits sequence promoting X-Men: Days of Future Past featuring the shapeshifter has been added to the Spidey sequel.
Sony owns the Spider-Man films rights. Fox owns the X-Men film rights. Why are rival studios playing cross-promotion?
According to Variety Spidey director Marc Webb had an existing contact with Fox Searchlight. Fox allowed Webb to direct Spider-Man if Fox agreed to promote the X-Men sequel.
This allows the Sony and Fox projects to emulate the Marvel Studios strategy of using the post-credits sequence to excite fans about the next film.
The agreement doesn’t mean a Spidey/X-Men crossover or team-up movie is in the works.
Fox does control the film rights to the Fantastic Four. The upcoming reboot of Marvel’s First Family will be in a shared universe with the Children of the Atom so you might see a “fantastic” hint in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Sony is expanding the Spidey universe with Sinister Six and Venom movies.
