Marvel shared new updates on the future of the X-Men at the Marvel All-New, All-Different Panel at NYCC and the boss made one thing clear.
“Contrary to popular opinion, we are NOT canceling the X-Men.” Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso declared. There have been conspiracy theories and rumors the X-line is getting cut and the Inhumans are expanding because a rival studio controls the X-Men film rights.
Inhumans are on the rise and as we’ve reported before, the Terrigenesis that is causing a spike in NuHumans is killing mutants.
Storm leads the Extraordinary X-Men (by Jeff Lemire and Humberto Ramos) on a global mission to protect mutants from the threat of the Terrigen Cloud. Beast is joining Uncanny Inhumans but it looks like a possible genetic war on the horizon.
“Let’s just say there will be conflicting goals for mutants and Inhumans coming up…” said Alonso.
All-New Wolverine writer Tom Taylor revealed Dr. Strange will be stopping by in issue #4.
“We knew we were killing Wolverine, so when we talked about who should be the next Wolverine, we thought ‘What could be cooler than seeing a woman in that yellow and blue costume?'” said Alonso.
All-New X-Men by Dennis Hopeless and Mark Bagley will see the return of the classic villain, The Blob in issue #4. This book stars Laura (the All-New Wolverine) and young Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Beast, Idie and Evan.
“We have a team of kids who don’t like the direction the adults have gone, so they’re going to go back to their roots being super heroes and trying to inspire people.” said Hopeless.
“A big part of our opening several arcs, we’re going to be watching Bobby figuring out who he is.” said Hopeless about the newly out young Bobby Drake.
“You’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg as far as X-Men announcements.” said Editor Nick Lowe.
Extraordinary X-Men, All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, All-New Wolverine and Old Man Logan are the big mutant books so far.
“We’re putting some of our very best creators on X-Men books. And like I said before, this is the tip of the iceberg. The X-Men aren’t going anywhere, we love them too much.” added Lowe.
“People greatly overstate how much we have to follow the studio, the studio follows us. We do comic books, we’re supposed to do stories in the Marvel Universe. We bend it, break it, and put it back together in new ways.” – Axel Alonso
The team stressed Kitty Pryde is now a big part of Guardians of the Galaxy while Rogue will continue to be part of Uncanny Avengers, now with Deadpool on board.
“There’s a pretty big focus on Rogue. Nothing’s ever been easy for her, and nothing ever will be. I think you’re going to see an incredible iteration of Rogue and her personality.” said Lowe.
The Editor-In-Chief again restated how the comics and studios relationship.
“People greatly overstate how much we have to follow the studio, the studio follows us. We do comic books, we’re supposed to do stories in the Marvel Universe. We bend it, break it, and put it back together in new ways.” said Alonso.
